There always seems to be alot of talk about gay marriage. I was just wondering, if your child was gay how do you think you would handle it?

Re: Just curious
I would be okay with it.
One thing that I might be a bit upset with is that they will be treated differently by the rest of the world.
Another would be grandchildren, but that can be worked out.

That's hard to say because I don't have children yet. I am 100% supportive of gay marriages. I think the only way I would be upset is if they didn't want children... I have to be a grandma!

I would be fine with it. I have no issues whatever with gay unions.

I would hope that I would be strong enough to let my child be happy no matter what they did with thier life or who they decided to love.

Re: Just curious
My FSIL said she would disown her daughter if she was gay. I thought that was sickening. I don't think you could really know how you would respond to something until you're put into that position...All I could hope for is that I love my children for whomever they are and accept and support all their decisions.
ETA: I think the reason for the excess posting on the subject is because it's been in the news alot lately...

Re: Just curious
what would you do, send them back??? my uncle is gay and it is a hard life in terms of acceptance, but love is love...if my child were gay, i would just hope that he or she finds someone who will love them in an awesome way b/c that is so special.

Re: Just curious
Id be ok with it. My cousin is gay and he finaly came out to a couple of family members a few years ago, when he told me I cried so much because he spent most of his life thinking he was diiferent and had been haboring a secret for years.
Life is too short to pass judgement as long as my kids are healthy and happy thats all I can ask

To answer my own question. FH and I would be fine with it. I would hope that they would fall in love and get married and have the same rights as we did. As far as grandchildren... they can always adopt or use a donor.

Re: Just curious
I would love him/her just the same.
I am very open minded about this. I have read alot of books and I know that you are born gay. You do not choose to be gay. This is how are you.
I would not fault my child for something he has no control over.
DH, however would be extremely disappointed.

Re: Just curious
Disappointment is normal I think... One has such ideals for their kids. And no one wants their childs like to be any harder than it has to be.
I would probably be disappointed but I would never shun my child..

Re: Just curious
I'll admit that I may be disappointed, however seeing how much I love my son, there is nothing that he could do that would make me not love him.
It's tough to really know how you'd react until you're put into that situation.

Wacky, Dh is so homphobic and anti gay that I would not be surprised if he did shun our child

No Nvrbrd. He may not be acceptable in the begining, but I think with you in the picture he would see the light

Re: Just curious
Sadly, I know a few people whose families cut ties with them when they came out. I know it is hard to predict how you would react(especially if it goes against your beliefs). I just wanted to make the question alittle more personal then usual. I think it is very easy to view things as black and white until you personalize the issue.
Thank you for your answers and your honesty.

Re: Just curious
We (my brother and I) were brought up to accept it. My uncle was gay. He was with his partner for most of our lives until my uncle passed away 2 years ago. So I don't see a problem with it.

Re: Just curious
Ok well i think i would be very disappointed. I know that is not the PC thing to say. But i am going to be honest. I think i would have a harder time than my FH. It is just a lifestyle i wouldn't want my child to have to deal with. When i say that i mean that ...let's face it..we don't live in the most excepting world and even the look of disappointment in my own eyes would be a lot for a son or daughter to handle. As sad as that may sound, there are sooo many social factors that are against them. Hell the world is hard enough straight people. The life of a gay man or woman..well i just don't know how they deal.
