Just curious

Was the town that you bought your house in your first choice or did you find that once you started looking you went else where for whaterver reason. The reason i ask is because Dh and I have our hearts set on Merrick but the housing costs are so high we may have to look for another town.

We didn't have one set town, per se, but we did have certain places that we were looking in.. we never thought that we would buy where we did, but I am so happy that we did now..

I had a list of about 5 towns I would consider, in no particualr order. We did wind up in one of them

We were living in Woodbury when we first started house hunting, so we began our search in Woodbury and Dix Hills. After looking in those areas for a number of months, we discovered we preferred the feel of the north shore towns and started moving our search in that direction: Oyster Bay, Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Centerport, north Greenlawn & Northport. We ultimately settled down in north Huntington.

Once we started looking we went else where because reality set in. In other words we realized that we did not want to be house poor.

We are moving to Westchester and wanted to live in White Plains or Pleasantville - but we couldn't find what we wanted for the $$$ we had...so we went a bit further north!!

Still happy though!

Re: Just curious

We originally thought North Shore. We thought maybe Port Washington or Manhasset and other towns along the Port Washington line. But this was going mostly by statistics/articles we read, house prices, word of mouth and commute to NYC. Well once we started going home shopping, we would take a new town each weekend and explore it and go to open houses. I found I didn't love the feel of those towns..they just weren't 100% me. So then we explored some South Shore towns and liked South Merrick and South Bellmore and wound up buying in Bellmore. I had never even heard of those towns before we started house shopping because we were so focused on North Shore towns. So far we are happy with our decision. We also really liked Syosset when we were looking but Syosset was a little further than we wanted to go.

Ditto, we started out looking closer to NY, but kept inching westward deeper into CT as we saw house prices. I joke around that on the map, it didnt look far from my first choice town to where we bought our house, but in reality it was like 25 miles
