Just Gave Up My Shower- long

Original post by adioguardi

A little backround: I have 3 younger sisters, I will be 40 years old in June, readying for my second marriage but it's my first wedding. My youngest sister (R) is 17 years younger than me and was originally thinking of getting married in March of 2006. Because they are young and just starting out and her FH is still in school they have decided to take a cruise to Nassau Island and elope there instead of having a wedding they cannot afford. Unfortunately, the only time they can both get a week off from work and school is the week of Sept. 5th, two weeks before my wedding! R asked for my blessing first before announcing it to the family since it was so close, she doesn't want to take anything away from me. Of course I gave it to her, I want her to do what makes her happy.
I just spoke to my other sister (G) who was trying to see if we could arrange to surprise our R and show up in Nassau for her wedding, but unfortunately, none of us will be able to afford to go - especially with it being so close to my wedding (and I go to school at night and it's almost impossible to get a night off). So I told my G that we should do something for her, so let's throw her a shower. So as not to be a financial burden on my family, I told G that if she was planning a shower for me, she should scratch it (I'm pretty sure she was planning one for me, she had insisted that I start a registry).
I am a little sad about not having a shower, but I don't want my family to know that - so that's why I'm letting it out here because you girls are great, very supportive and understanding. I am happy for my sister though and she needs household stuff more than I do.
Sorry this is so long!

Wow! I wasn't expecting so many replies, you are all so wonderfully kind. I'm feeling much better about the whole thing, especially since it appears that my parents are going to be able to make the trip with my sister! Now they won't get married without any family there. I am also very excited about getting together with my other two sisters and planning her shower.

Thanks again for all you kind thoughts and words.

Any girl would be lucky to have you as a sister.
What goes around comes around...your kind act will come back to you threefold.

You are very sweet, and that was very kind of you to do for your sister. I don't know if I could do that myself.

If you like, you could invite your closest family members and friends to gather together before your wedding. Don't call it a shower, just a get together, or invite people to meet for lunch somewhere. Personally, at my age (37), FH and I don't need much stuff, but I wanted a shower in order to get together with many of my relatives and friends in an informal setting. We do this too rarely these days.

Sorry to intrude but why not have a double shower??? What a bigger surprise for your little sister, here she is planning your shower and SURPRISE it's her shower too. This way you get to have your shower, which you TOTALLY DESERVE, and she can have something special too.

I think your act of being selfless should be rewarded.

It's so good to see that there are still brides planning a wedding who doesn't feel that EVERYTHING leading up to and the day of their wedding should be all about THEM. I'm sure God is going to reward you for such a kind and selfless act. Your sister, family and FH is blessed to have you.
