My old boss would tell us at 5pm - 'well I would have let you leave early if you had asked' - um yeah, cause that would happen

That's what he usually does too! Just so you can't actually MAKE plans because you aren't positive that you'll be out in time. Ugh!

Even more shocking is that my boss is my dad....lol...You probably all think I'm insane, can't leave early before a holiday when my boss is my father (a family bussiness) but leaving early, taking off, and calling in sick are things that he takes pretty seriously...Like I don't have the choice of 'taking a personal day' for no real reason.....Working in a family bussiness has real benefits but also some major drawbacks I am slowly learning.
