I know a lot of you mention checking with photography schools, etc and Newsday....what about calling Katherine Gibbs...it's a school where my friend went for graphic design and I'm pretty sure they would have a photography program or new graduates looking for portfolio experience....a lot of *newbie* photographers might be willing to cut the cost if you give them permission to use your photos for their portfolio. Just a thought.....oh..and whoever used the Newsday guy or a *real* photojournalist...how much were they?

Nassau Community College also has an outstanding photography department. Maybe you could check them out too.

I would be worried about the quality of the developing. Just a thought to consider. You want high quality pictures that will last.

Be VERY careful about using students as a major vendor. You cannot retake your wedding photos, nor can you recreate those moments of the day. You have NO legal recourse with a student if they a)fail to show up b)don't do what you have asked or c) take awful photos. Also, just because you are a good photographer doesn't mean you are a good wedding photographer. And you NEED to confirm that they have the proper equipment. I was recently at a wedding where the couple hired a photo grad student. He might be a great photographer but he was totally confused when it came time to do family photos or couple photos or BP photos. He is an art photographer so he likes to take photos of the beautiful trees blowing in the wind. Well a bride needs a nice shot with mom and that is just not the same set-up. So use caution. I KNOW a lot of couples are on a budget but photographry is not the place to try and get the 'cheap' guy.

DH and I had a very strict budget and photography was the only place we didn't scrimp on. These pictures will be the only physical memory of that day, the only thing we can show our kids. We can't show our kids the images in our minds...

Someone mentioned the same thing to me but regarding musicians for the ceremony and/or cocktail hour. Check out local music schools and programs, one may be able to find someone who is looking to pick up some extra cash for an hour or two…
I have access to professional photographers through work and depending on what quotes I get from those that make a business out of it, I may elect to go with someone I know. There are pros and cons to using both. I am going to shop around and select the person/company I feel most comfortable with and will hopefully give the highest quality at a reasonable price. I really want copies of negatives, some people I know are willing to do this for me (they actually prefer doing it that way), so that just may be the deciding factor…
