President Bush just signed a bill that will allow him to arrest someone without a lawyer, without anyone else knowing the person was arrested, and the person will not be allowed to have a trial. Now, I was a little confused at first (And skeptical) But i did some research and it all seems valid!
This scares me. My friend who is a cop is the one who told me, if anyoen else heard this please tell me...I'm kind of freaking?

Im asking FH he is a NYPD Det. I cant see how that is possible it totally goes against everything this country stands for & the little things called the Constitution & the Bill of Rights! Its impossible. Ill find out there has to be a loop hole.

This isn't freaking me out. I doubt this is true.
I think for the most part IF this was enacted it is to fight terrorism or organized crime...I doubt they will do this to unsuspecting Joe Schmoe's.

Is this only if they suspect you're a terrorist, or for any arrest?

it's true. i was going to comment earlier, but i'm trying to keep myself out of trouble...
if you want more info, there's lots of stuff on it on the aclu website.
it's another bill that was passed by playing on 9/11 fears. it doesn't so much apply (right now) to the common man. their rationale for the bill is this: they want to be able to arrest a 'suspected terrorist' without having to build a body of evidence in hopes of 'preventing an attack' in the interim.
i am whole-heartedly opposed to this trampling on the basic rights of habeas corpus, but there are a lot of unjust things that have been rationalized by terrorist fears. this is one of many.

Honestly, with terrorists you can't F around. Yes, this measure is a little drastic but these people are running around our country freely and you don't know who they are. They plan to use our freedom against us and with them, you can't play games. I hate George Bush but this is something that you have to do unfortunately. Let me tell you something, my Father is Italian but looks Middle Eastern- he was stopped on one of the bridges post 9/11 when they use to check vehicles. And, my Father didn't care- it was just precautionary measures. Yea, it was 'racial profiling' but unfortunately in this day and age with this hatred these people have for Americans, it has to be done. For our safety, it's worth it.

i can appreciate your point of view on the need to protect our safety, but this is exactly how oppressive regimes get their start: they pray on fear to intimidate the populace into sacrificing their freedom in exchange for protection. they generate fear to gain and maintain control, which is exactly what the american media has done. actually, this is exactly how the taliban achieved their place in afghanistan; the people were furious and terrified by the russian occupation, so they gave themselves over to the taliban. now we're spending billions of american tax dollars to 'free' them and racking up military and civilian casualties in the process.
they have passed multiple bills right under ours noses (with negligiable media coverage, btw) that are in direct violation of basic civil liberties that millions of underinformed americans are still under the impression they have. it's way too big brother for my taste even if they are justifying it with valid causes.

Believe me, I know it's drastic and I know what you are saying. But at this point with the lack of control the government had in the first place, this has to be done. Our government was naive in the past and thought we were so strong and that nothing would happen. I think the fact that 9/11 happened is due to the government being so idiotic with border controls and airport security. If perhaps they had tighter security in airports and searched people in the past, it wouldn't have happened. Honestly, the fact that people b*tch and complain of their rights post 9/11 of being searched because they felt that it violated their rights- are you kidding me???? I think they should have no problems if it meant that their country would be a little bit safer. At this point, these people that HATE us are in our country- living here and plotting against us. So therefore, these drastic measures have to be done now to prevent any further attacks.

okay, this is my last comment for the day:
the US should spend more energy examining what it is about our foreign policy that's making the people of that region so angry and less deciding which basic tenets of the constitution its citizens will be willing to sacrifice in the name of national defense and homeland security.

I wish this were true. Do you know how many ppl are wrongly accused of crimes...and how many alone have been on death row, and then been proven innocent after the fact. This scares me!! Ppl can be framed!

Unfortunately sometimes someone will THINK what you are doing is wrong because of differences of opinion and then what... you sit in jail or prison because you were living your life according to the constitution that for some reason Bush constantly underminds
Bush is awful and can't wait until he is out.... he screwed this country up so badly it is shameful.

If this new law is about terrorists then I agree with it. Whether you are a US citizen or not - if you are suspected of any type of terrorism than you are guilty until proven innocent and should have NO rights - Just like an earlier post, if you did nothing wrong than no worries. The average person would not be suspected. If you are suspected in being involved in any type of terrorism than you must of done something really wrong.

Does anybody know the details of this bill? I am curious about what their guidelines for the suspected terrorist are? IMO there is a huge difference between arresting someone without a lawyer because they look suspicious walking down the street and arresting someone because you found a room full of bombs and planning material in their house.
