I didn't really formally invite anyone to the ceremony... a couple of my coworkers mentioned that they'd like to come and also a friend of my mom's that wasn't invited to the wedding asked where the church was. I would just do it by word-of-mouth...

IMO, it's rude to only invite people to the ceremony. Ceremonies don't require an invitation though, they're open so if people want to come they will come.......

I guess of the two options I would choose word of mouth....but to be honest if someone even told me I was more than welcome to attend the ceremony but not the reception.....I don't know, that wouldn't sit so well with me...it's just one of those things that should be understood and not actually called attention to......

Like if I know of someone who's getting married that I know I wouldn't actually be invited to the wedding but I know them and still want to see it...I would just show up to the ceremony so I could witness it....this is the case with some of my friend's siblings.... I know I wouldn't be invited to the wedding but I watched them grow up and want to see what I can so I just go to the ceremony...I don't wait to be asked.

i agree and in my case I wouldn't do it... for some reason it seems okay if you are having a church wedding (i'm not) and people want to come to the church part... but I can't see telling people they can come to my RH just for the ceremony.

plus I am weird and i don't WANT anyone at the ceremony I was even debating about lying on the invites and just telling my close family to be there for the ceremony but I got vetoed.

IMO, I would not invite someone to the ceremony and not the reception. I would personally be insulted. I would invite the people I want there for the whole day. Anyone that doesn't get invited can show up at the ceremony if they chose, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Re: Just inviting people to the ceremony....

it's possible its a regional thing but i cant imagine inviting someone to the ceremony and not reception unless you are a teacher/coach and want to invite your students.

FH's assistant bball coach got married while we were in college, and he 'invited' the entire team to the ceremony. i've also seen teachers invite their class to the ceremony, but in both cases they were at a church and not at the RH.

I am getting married at my RH and anyone invited to the ceremony is invited to the reception as well. my OOT BM asked me if I was inviting ABC (a girl i do not like who seems to be trying to invite herself) and I told my BM i was not. She suggested that I invite her just to the ceremony. I personally think that is much more offensive than not inviting her at all, and I said no. Plus, I don't want her at my ceremony.
