Just enjoy yourself and take with you who ever you want.
I would try Valentina's in Brooklyn. They are wonderful. If your bridal gown is over $1000, you get free alternations, free headpiece, free slip and free veil.

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
My first and only appointment was at Kleinfeld. In about an hour and a half, I walked out of there minus a 60% deposit on a gown!
I brought my mom - bring whoever you feel most comfortable with.
I have to say, dress shopping has been the most fun part of the planning so far. My mom and I had a blast!
Good luck and have fun!!

me to! actually I went alone last friday to RK , but I made my first appointments for tonight in Westchester and for the Bridal Garden in Bethpage for Saturday. I tried to make an appointment at David's but it was booked. I might try Jessica McClintock in Roosevelt Field or Estelle's also, since I don't think I need an appointment at either. I've heard good things about Bridal Reflections & the Bridal Garden.
I'm just bringing 1 friend tonight & my mom Saturday. I've heard it helps to bring pictures of styles you like.

I forgot to add that you should try everything on, even if it looks bad on the hanger or you think you don't like the style. It just might end up being the gown that flatters you the most.
Example: I wanted a simple sheath with cap sleeves. I got a strapless beaded ballgown.
You never know!

I don't know what your budget is, but try Kleinfeld's in Brooklyn, they have a huge selection. I went with my mom, but you can take whoever you want. I wouldn't suggest taking too many people, you'll get too many different opinions. And by the way, they wil try to push the expensive dresses on you at Kleinfeld's but they do have some more reasonably priced, just ask.

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
You must be sooooooo excited...I brought my MOH and stepmother the first time I went and then my MOH, mom, and my mom's best friend since high school the second time I went. I had found my dress the first time, but wanted to try on other ones before I made my final decision. Every other dress I tried on just didn't make me smile like the one I bought did.
Make sure you try on every dress the consultant suggests...the dress I bought I atually didn't like on the hanger but once I tried on I knew it was the dress.
You should try Carmella's in Huntington...it's a family run business and Carmella is sooooooooo nice!!!!!!!!!! Have fun and be ready to be completely pooped when you get home...I was!!!!!!
Please post pics when you find the dress!

Tourist,
What did you think of RK Bridal? I haven't started yet, but I think that's my first stop. I wanna get the Bridesmaids dresses out of the way...

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
I will make my first visit shopping for dresses to RK Bridal on the 20th. I am going alone. I though that would be weird, but I see other girls did that.
I realy want to show my mom and my MOH, when I get home.
Do you know if RK Bridal will let you take pictures inside of the dresses you like?

No they don't let you take pics...at least for the BM dresses. I was able to sneak a few in by turning off the flash and going into the dressing room with my BM. I am getting my BM through their no frills internet program.
As for places to go for wedding dresses, I went the Bridal Salon at Macy's in Manhasset and they were so nice. Try on as many styles as you can. I went in with one style in mind and decided on another bc they suggested that it would be more flattering. And it was!

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
I bought my dress at RK. They do not let you take pictures of dresses. It is not as nice of an experience as a salon but, they have a lot of styles in both wedding and BM dresses. I got my dress there for $300 less then I had found it for at any other place.

Dawn, Definitely try Lillette's as well. My friend brought her dress there. I am sure your MOM would LOVE to go with you. My mom came with me and when we found the perfect dress she began to cry.

It was alittle overwhelming , especailly since it was my first time anywhere. I'd never even gone to help a friend. And I was alone.
Its tough b/c you are on your own & there are so many dresses, its hard to tell what they look like all crmmed on a rack. You have to put your name on a list & when someone is avaialble they help you try on. If you go back, you can them make an appointment wit that person.
I think that will be better, b/c they she can help me find what I am looking for. I kind of know what I want, but couldn't find somthing that fit the description.
I might go back if I don't have any luck at the Bridal Garden.
I would reccomend it, but not as your first store.

SHAVE SHAVE SHAVE
Just kidding, but it is a good idea. Wear stockings/knee highs and bring a pair of heals (close to what you might want to wear is better). Or else you can wear community shoes (yuck). Wear/bring a white bra (red straps look funny (strapless is better if think you might go that route). Try to take pictures. Write down the style numbers and manufacter.

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
I brought heels the 1st tiem, but didn't use them, they jsut had be stand on the paltofrm- dresses are way to long on, the hels wouldn't make a difference at least now.
Stockings- definitely, then you are not barefoot ont he floor or inthe generic shoes if you do use them. they also suck inthe gut, which helps. I shave under arms, but didn't always have time for legs, so they stocking made me worry about it less. I also felt less naked that way-and I also reccomend a strapless bra.
Also it might help to learn the terms, like dropped waist, natural waist, so they don't confuse you with jargon.

Re: just made appionments for first time dress shopping
Don't be nervous! Dress shopping is so much fun!
I would recommend to keep in mind what you like and don't like about different aspects of each dress - you'll soon determine what type of waist, skirt, neckline, etc. flatters your body type the most (then - you'll soon be able to tell the salespeople exactly what you're looking for). As everyone said - definitely try all different styles on - even if you hate it on the hanger!
Also, always try to keep your 1st Choice Dress is mind - so you can compare every dress to it, until another dress becomes the 1st Choice Dress. This makes it A Lot easier to make a decision, and keeps you from getting confused over which dresses you like best.
Finally - bring a drink and a snack with you. Trying on dress after dress is Very Exciting and also Very Draining!
