Don gave you part of it. But actually the REAL story behind it is... after 2000 pitching for the Mets... Hampton was a free agent.
He refused to re-sign with New York... and he decided to sign with crappy Colorado and he was quoted as saying 'He liked Colorado because they have a superior school system over New York'.
Well he went to Colorado... totally SUCKED (cause that city's ballpark is horrible for pitchers).
He then got traded to Atlanta where I am sure the Atlanta school system isn't nearly as top notch as oh holy Colorado.

You gotta admit though if Hampton would have resigned with NY... we could have had a chance of at least contending during those dark years of 2001-2004.
He pitched VERY well for the Mets in 2000... took us to a World Series.
His attitude toward NY and its culture and lifestyle just sucked.
