It depends on the individual hall and your contract.

Depends.
I cancelled my hall. They actually gave me back 2/3 of my deposit and he;d 1/3 for a future date. Then I had an issue with them booking the future date, and I got the rest back. This was in Nassau.
In Suffolk they have to give it all back minus a small fee if it's putside of 6 months from the date

Thanks. It is in suffolk so that helped alot. I know the small vendors just keep the money you gave them and say you can use it towards another event. The hall was my main concern.

Did your contract have any rules about canceling?

Re: Just out of curiosity
A lot of contracts say things like they have to rebook the event and if they don't, you have to pay the entire cost of the event. Hopefully they will rebook and you only have to pay the difference in price between the event they did book and your original event.
From my experience, that's what Larkfield Manor and Crest Hollow contracts say.

If the hall is in Suffolk County, the law that entitles you to your deposits back (they get to keep $100 or any money that they actually spent on your event) if you cancel more than 6 months in advance supercedes any contract terms that require that they rebook or something like that. So, no matter what your contract says, if your hall is in Suffolk you get your money back.
