Re: just out of curiosity, RC church question....
The rules are that sacraments can not be performed outside the walls of a church. Its an assinine rule if you ask me but that is how they work.

I'm not sure if that's what they meant. I think they mean that a RC Priest will not perform a ceremony outside of a church... I THINK is the key word here!

I think their reasoning is because they beleive you should havethe sacramnet performed inside a church. I don't think it is just the outdoors they are opposed to, but just outside of a church in general. I think if you find a priest willing to do it, it can happen. I was baptized in my home and that's not supposed to happen either!

There are exceptions to every rule, and priests that are more liberal with the church rules than others, and would be willing to perform outdoor marriage ceremonies.
I think the rule about not marrying outside comes from the fact that all of the holy sacraments are received inside the confines of church walls. The church is the Lord's house and the holy place where His blessings are bestowed on His followers.

Anything is possible with a dispensation....
We are getting married at the reception hall with a RC priest and a Cantor. We are doing it indoors, but that the option to have it outside offered by both the Cantor and Priest.

Re: just out of curiosity, RC church question....
Everyone has rules, not just the Catholic Faith. And while this rule may be a tough one, calling it assinine is a bit harsh.
Sacraments are to be held in COVERED buildings. A home baptism is allowed, a home wedding is allowed - it is in a covered place. Yes, you can get a dispensation to have it recognized by the church, but the best thing anyone can do is talk to their priest about the specific rules. Whatever we may think we know, only your priest can tell you for sure.

Re: just out of curiosity, RC church question....
Sorry if you girls dont feel the same way but I think implying that God wont recognize your marriage if you are not married in a certain building (or by a priest for that matter) is absolutely ridiculous. Why would God care? Every church has certain rules but the Catholic church seems to have a lot of rules that have nothing to do with Jesus Christ, the Bible or even Cannon Law. I still think its assinine and I dont think there is anything wrong with saying so. I dont expect anyone to agree with me but that is just how I feel.
Edited to add that I spoke to SEVERAL priests about this issue and every single one had a different story. In fact, the rules of each parish differ considerably without clear understanding (even by the priests) why.

I agree with the word assinine used in this instance is harsh, but I don't think Stef meant it maliciously.
We chose to have it indoors because of this rule (fi felt more comfortable with it), although the option was presented to us. It will still be a sacrament for my fiance, as his church has told him as long as the dispensation is granted, it's fine. There is a rule for everything, and as always, there must be ways for them to be broken occasionally in circumstances beyond control.
Edited to add: Yes, rules are different for each parish, and this exists in every religion and denomination. Just like some priests will perform interfaith and others won't...the same goes for rabbis and cantors.

sonicstef, although you have your own beliefs and others have their own, please understand that what you have said is insulting and disrespectful to some people on this board. i dont know why you wouldnt care about that. i would never tell anyone of another religion that some aspect of their religion is asinine. i usually avoid the controversial issues on this board, but this one was just too personal to let go.

instead of injecting personal opinions on this topic, we should be just be answering the simple question that was asked!
she didn't ask for anyone's opinions she wanted fact.

I think that's the problem....no one, including the clergy...knows WHY?
