Just something that I've been wondering...

Just something that I've been wondering...

I would have put a better title, but wasnt sure how to word it...

What do you girls think about going to a fam member's wedding where you really know nothing about their fiance? It happened at my cousin's wedding (I think we only met the bride one time before their wedding) and now FH's cousin is getting hitched next month to someone we're going to meet for the 1st time at our own wedding.

I dunno, I guess because Fh & I have invested so much time into each other's family that it just seems odd to me There's very few guests at our own wedding of whom we don't know- but they are distant relatives.

I'm sure some of you ladies are actually the bride and groom of the situation I'm describing so please don't flame me... enlighten me How do you feel being on the other side of all this?

We had some guests at our wedding that we hadn't met. Was it ideal in my mind? No. Of course it would have been nice to meet/know everyone before hand but it just wasn't possible. It didn't phase us at all. We were introduced and that was that. Honestly, that night it didn't matter to me at all. I was happy my relatives that brought dates we hadn't met were having a good time. My feeling is if they are good enough for my family they are good enough for us!

There are some relatives on FMIL's side that I dont know..... Ive never met them, nor have I seen them in a picture. It's okay though... dont look at it as a huge deal and let it get you worried. Say hello, smile and keep it moving

There are going to be quite a few at my wedding who i do not know. FH doesnt really keep in touch with his father's side but we did have to invite them, so I am going to be introduced for the first time to a few people.

If I see them again, I see them. If not, then I dont. It doesnt bother me that I wont personally know them till the day of.

I had this idea that at my wedding I didn't want to be using the words 'nice to meet you' however, it is what it is. Even if I knew every relative of FH's, there would still be guests I didn't know.
Being on the other side, invited to a wedding where I didn't know either the bride or groom very well, I still might feel uncomfortable, and probably wouldn't go out of my way to attend the wedding (for example if it was out of state and required airplane tix, a hotel, etc, I probably wouldn't go).
I was actually discussing this with one of my BMs today when I mentioned that like none of FH's fam is coming to my shower. She asked if I was close with them, and while I personally am not, these are FH's aunts, I would think they would want to be there. But maybe they feel uncomfortable because they don't know me well.

Funny u should bring this up, fh friend started dating a girl and she told fh's friend' you should call ur friend John so I can meet them before their wedding'. Sooo we are actually having dinner w them tonight so fh and I can meet her so that's one less...but as I go over our list right now...I'm noticing we've met everyone except maybe my moms coworkers that I've met fh hasn't but there are only 2 bc he has met the other ones.

This is going to be my wedding:

Hi, I'm the bride, nice to meet you.

IF and only if the OOT guests actually come. FMIL is inviting all her cousins from all walks of life, and their children, so we're going out to third cousins on his side. I haven't met more than a handful of the second and third cousins, and only one great aunt. There's 78 OOT guests, and like 65 of those are his haha. So it's going to be a bit weird to say the least. Plus 2 coworkers I haven't met and their wives. But at least the coworker where I met both him and his wife at their wedding 2 years ago will be there, so reciprocal I guess.

On my side, FH will know mainly everyone, because I have a very small family. Only if my dad's cousins, my nana's cousin, and my mom's friend come will he not have met them, but we don't keep close with my dad's family, so not unusual.

And yes, I'm a little bent out of shape that I will only have 20 people at my own wedding that are there for me. It's a little crushing.

I just went to my cousin's wedding to meet his wife for the first time.

True ... they live in Florida, and she lived in Sweden until this past November ... so I guess (hope?) this would be considered an extenuating circumstance?

I am also going to have lots of people I don't know at our wedding...I think alot of it is that I've met people and don't remember who they are...everyone on his side is named Concetta and Angela and they all have the same last name, its like that scene in Goodfellas. I do however know all my side and I think I know most people's dates as well...but thats TBD.

I don't think its that strange. I have cousins that live far away and I've never met their significant others.

Im going to be meeting a lot of people for the first time at my wedding. The FIL's friends and my moms co-workers.

I have no problem with it. Im going to have about 200 people at the wedding and just cant meet everyone beforehad. But between me and the FH we both know, separatly, every person coming.

Re: Just something that I've been wondering...

I have a few family members (cousins and aunts and uncles) that have never met FH and vice versa. I don't think it's all that strange. We have a lot of family that don't live locally and his family that live near by don't really get together that often. For me, I'm much closer with my Mom's side of the family than my dad's side because they live far away and we only see them MAYBE 3 times a year and FH usually has to work on holidays and can't make the trip with me. They NEVER come out here. The last time any of them were on LI was for my graduation 11 years ago. Doesn't mean we don't email and stuff or that we don't get along or anything, we love eachother, geography just gets in the way, lol Hope this helps :)
