Just took hardcore inventory

Just took hardcore inventory

I just spent the better part of 2 hours going through my house, room by room, drawer by drawer, cabinet by cabinet, and took inventory of every little nonsensical thing that I've taken for granted for the past nearly 25 years of my life living at home...and I have 3 pages front and back and 1 page just front filled with just STUFF. It's crazy all the little things you need to buy to fill up a kitchen, a bathroom, and linen/laundry closet...it's really overwhelming. Plus all the stuff that we still absolutely need that we didn't get on our registry....and not even counting all our personal effects and clothing and whatnot to bring.

EEP! We're so excited to start getting all of our things together! Not excited to drop probably a grand on nothing lol, but it's still exciting to finally start buying things for a new life! Major shopping Friday and Saturday, and then Sunday is cleaning/start moving some shower stuff in day!

It can be overwhelming, but it's so exciting to embark on this new chapter in your life!

My unsolicited advice, don't try to do it all at once. Lots of stuff you don't need right away. Other stuff, you don't need at all or you buy one kind and then realize that just because that's what your mom always had doesn't mean it's right for you.

I've been on my own for just about 20 years and I can tell you that there are plenty of things my mom has in her house that I don't have in mine and vice versa. Buy things as you need them and as you see them on sale - it will all come together.

Have fun!

Thanks, I appreciate the advice, unsolicited or otherwise!

I didn't include a lot of things I know I won't need probably ever if at all...like certain cleaning products and laundry things and like Draino and all those types of really specific things...it's more like wow, I need bar soap, and liquid soap, and a bag of razors, and aluminum foil, and lunch bags....all these little things that you don't realize you need on a daily basis. Just really overwhelming.

Don't worry eventually you figure it all out. When we got back from our honeymoon we looked at each other and laughed bc we didn't realize how much we needed as far as food, toiletries, just the basics....and little by little we bought things and stocked up our closets...Costco became our best friend LOL

just make sure you have soap, toilet paper, bread and milk

I also think moving is a good time to get rid of clutter. That way you're not just bringing stuff you barely touched/used to your new house. Good luck! How exciting :)

Oh yeah...welcome to the real world! A very valuable piece of advice....most things you can get along the way as you need them...the ONE thing you should buy immediately? A plunger! Try needing one and not having one handy...NOT FUN!

IMO I wouldn't go out and buy anything until you move in and see what you need and what you have room for. A one bedroom apt can get filled up very quickly with things you will never end up using.

I have been on my own since 1991.......and there are things my mother had and yes I used them in her house but do not miss at all.

Get TP, cleaning supplies and leave the rest til later.

LOL coffee and a plunger are actually on my list!

I'm very fortunate to have a ton of kitchen cabinets and separate pantry and huge linen closet and walk in closet, so I can afford to go a little above just toilet paper and coffee LOL. I'll hold off on the office-related items until we're able to situate our computer area. I appreciate all the advice though. But I'm nuts and I definitely need to buy a swiffer and dow and magic erasers and all those things because I swear I won't walk barefoot in my own place until I'm absolutely positive there is no remnant of the previous occupants (I'm really fun in hotels too )

Awww Ali! I lived at home unttil I got married as well! It was so much fun buying all the stuff and setting up the new place! Enjoy this time!

I travel with cans of lysol and clorox wipes so I understand about hotel rooms. FH laughs at me because no matter where we go, I don't let him touch ANYTHING until I disinfect!!!

As far as cleaning products go, swiffer wet jet (love it!), tilex, soft scrub, fantastic and glass plus will get you a good start.

And don't forget a broom and dust mop!!

Dix Hills, just down the road from FIL's...which has the potential to blow up in our faces lol, but at least we're familiar with the area and the grocery shopping and the stores and restaurants, and have an open invitation to do our laundry there if we're skeeved by the laundromat, which I might actually take her up on lol.

You are too cute. Don't stress too much. It will all come together. My advice when not having a washer/dryer that you can get all your laundry done quick at the Laundromat. If you figure out what time it is empty you can use a bunch of machines, and get it done fast.
