Just when things are going so well...

Just when things are going so well...

So today we start with giving Ryan dairy food. He had a few little spoons of yogurt this morning. It's so funny the faces they make when they try a new taste/texture. Anyway, he seems o.k. but when he wakes up from his morning nap, his eyelids are really red and swollen.

Now he's had a little rash for a few days (prior to the dairy) - nothing angry, just little dots so I figure maybe his skin (which is very sensitive) was just irritated from all the crawling etc. But now he's got 2 hives. Plus, his baby eczema is back with a vengence - several super dry scaly red spots. But the eyelids freak me out. So I run him over to the ped and they want me to stop all new foods and take him for a complete blood workup and to check for allergies to dairy and wheat.

He's such a sweet tempered baby and this will be the second time we're dragging him off for tests somewhere (the first being the pediatric cardiologist after the ped thought he heard a hear murmur... ). I hate the thought of them pricking him up to take blood, and I also selfishly hate the thought of him being allergic to some type of food...hopefully this is just an adjustment after being on soy formula for so long. I was sooo hoping to start the Cheerios but now I can't do anything...poor boy!

Lee I'm sorry to hear about this. You might remember that I had to take Paul to the pediatric cardiologist for the exact same reason, so I sympathize with your hesitance in going for more tests.

Can I ask - where are you taking Ryan for the allergy tests? I really would like to take Paul for allergy tests, too b/c he's been on and off w/hives for awhile now and I can't seem to pinpoint exactly WHAT is doing it to him. However, Paul's pediatrician suggested he might be too young for allergy tests, since there are still alot of things he hasn't eaten yet - like nuts, shellfish, strawberries etc. and therefore they will automatically appear as allergies in the tests.
I would be very interested in Ryan's doctor's perspective, and if this was at all a concern.
You can FM me if you prefer. Thanks!

What are you putting on him for the eczema? Rebecca has a really little bit of it, and the doctor suggested Curel, which seems to be working great. Any other suggestions?

Re: Just when things are going so well...

I was using Eucerin lotion, but at this point it is so dry and scaly that I got a week's prescription for cortisone cream - I hate using it but I've put it off and now it's bad enough to use it. I think I also have to limit his baths to keep him from drying out.

He still has this 'little tiny dot' rash all over his back and stomach - it doesn't bother him, but it's really bothering me since I have no idea what is causing it or what to do for it....

...I'm taking him for his blood test Saturday morning - poor baby...

I'm so sorry! I hope he feels better, and the rash goes away! I know how you feel - we feel responsible in every way to find out and cure EVERYTHING for our little ones!!!

So sorry about Ryan. You are probably right though, he may just need to adjust from the soy based to dairy. Hopefully all will turn out well.
