Re: Kaui & Maui
We went to Kaui for HM. It was so beautiful that I would often turn to my husband and say, 'this is fake, I'm dreaming!' The pros... beautiful friendly so many things to do (activity wise not night club) calm calm calm laid back life style, flip flop and a sundress the dolphins
cons it is very $$ booo you should rent a jeep or any SUV, we rented a Cobalt and um yeah..DH wanted to return it because it was slow slow slow (pedal to the metal and nada)
also, if you are into partying, this island isn't for you really but the Hyatt has good bars, outdoor drinks..lots of people to meet...
I am counting the days til we go again and I cried when we drove into the airport because there is a sign that says 'til we meet again'
best of luck planning this..this is an amazing state ...

we were very lucky to stay at a time share owned by a family friend...we had to pay full price though..it was The Point At Poi Pu (diamond resorts thru RCI) you can use them as a regular hotel too..which is GREAT because there is a kitchen and you don't have to worry about eating every night at a different place...plus...ocean front balconies...ohh yeah

Re: Kaui & Maui
Kauai - naturally beautiful and super-romantic. It doesn't have much going on in terms of nightlife but there are some great restaurants and lots to do during the day. Beautiful beaches and hiking and snorkeling, etc. One of the most beautiful places in the world.
Maui: - not as 'beautiful' as Kauai (not as green and lush) but still gorgeous. It might be my favorite Hawaiian island because I think it's the perfect mix of laid-back and activity. Lots of nightlife too if that's what you're looking forward. Downside of Maui - if you go during 'peak' season, can have a lot of kids and it does get crowded.

Thanks. I have read that Maui can have a lot of kids and be crowded. Is there a way to avoid the kids!? What hotels did you stay at? Also, would you recommend staying more nights in Maui? The FH really wants to take advantage of activities... we heard from a travel agent that theres not much to do in Kaui and we'd get bored easily after a few days..

Re: Kaui & Maui
On our first trip to Hawaii we did 6 nights on Kauai and 7 on Maui. For our HM we did 8 nights on Kauai and 12 on Maui - we were never bored in either place. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai and DH and I are absolutely in LOVE with the Hyatt Regency on Maui. The Hyatt on Maui is is kid friendly. There is, however, a separate children's pool. We did not have any issues with kids on our HM but I know that it does happen.
On a previous trip to Maui, we stayed at the 4 Seasons and didn't see a kid the entire time we were there. However, DH and I like the Kaanapali area better than the Wailea area because we like the proximity to Lahaina.
As far as there not being much to do on Kauai - there is plenty to do! Some stuff we did while on Kauai: hiked the Kalalau trail; took a zodiac boat snorkel trip along the Napali coast; hiked the Waimea canyon; snorkeled, snorkeled, snorkeled, flew 'trikes' over the canyon; took a helicopter tour over the waterfalls; rented 'mud bugs' and drove through some really cool plantations; went zip lining; DH played golf; I had a spa day; took a ride up to the north shore to Hanalei Bay.
The Grand Hyatt on Kauai is also 'kid friendly' but not as many families tend to go to Kauai. Also, they are very strict about enforcing the 'adults only' area of the pool.
I would definitey recommend staying longer in Maui though. I think its the best of both worlds - quiet and yet a million things to do.
