I'm annoyed that some photographers that I like will not let me keep the negatives. I will order my album, parent albums and reprints from them but at that point, I should get the negatives at no charge!!! I'm moving out of the country so these photographers get to keep my photos and do whatever they want with them to advertise their business and I get nothing!!! I'd also like to say that I'm moving somewhere that does not have a postal system so i cannot get pictures mailed to me!!!

Re: keeping the negatives after your wedding
My photographer said he keeps them in a fire proof vault for 1 year after we get the books incase we want any extra pics blown up or anything after that he will contact us to see if we want any other pic and then release the negatives.
I totally understand his thoughts on this b/c with a newly married couple either just moving or still unsettled the neg's can get ruined or lost very easily this way at least you have a year to think if you need anything and chances are after a year you are not going to say that you need another 5x7 and would have whatever photos you need/want. I would rather have it in his hands and be responsible for it then me ruining them somehow.
Of course...JMO

Re: keeping the negatives after your wedding
I think I had to pay $50 or $75...but I get them once my album is done and they don't need them anymore.

Re: keeping the negatives after your wedding
In the beginning I was very annoyed as well as ownership of the negatives was the number one priority for me. Shop around. You will find someone willing to do it for you at a reasonable rate. Whether the amount for negatives is built into the overall “package” or at an additional cost, always compare total amounts to see what you are getting. Places not willing to fork over negatives count on the repeat business and will charge you an arm, leg, and partial torso to get additional prints - steer clear of them unless you are willing to shell out $$$$$$$.

I think the negatives are important to have, we get them 6 months after our wedding album is complete, realistically I will most likely go back to them when I want prints from my nagtives anyways, because they cutsom print them much nicer than I ever could, but I wanted to have the option.

do they do their own developing or do they send it off somewhere else? i was under the impression a lot of places now farm it out, if that is the case i always seek to avoid the 'middle man' as one pays a premium for that. again, i have yet to do my research, but i THINK what i will wind up doing myself is taking negatives and having pictures printed somewhere reputable in manhattan, where other photographers get theirs developed.

Re: keeping the negatives after your wedding
What is the point of them not giving or charging for the negatives anyway? I don't even understand that. I was told yesterday I will get mine ONLY AFTER I do my albums. So far, I wasn't told of any extra charge for the negatives. But, I just don't understand why they don't give them automatically if we are paying for our pics. Can someone explain this?

Not giving, they count on repeat business and will charge $$$$$$$ for reprints. They 'have you by the balls' because they know how important these images are to you and know you can't go anywhere else.
Charging for negatives is understandable in a way because if they are in it for 'the business', forking over negatives is a loss of repeat business for them. Photographers in general do account for this, and the cost is reflected either in the total price or as a separate charge.

I won't get my negatives right away because the photographer would like to make copies for his portfolio. They need the negatives to create the prints.
