Keeping your own name - Channa Plaques, Announcement at Reception, etc etc?????
Anyone else keeping your own name?
I just can't change my name. It's weird. I should absolutely NOT want my dad's name and I have told my mom that if she goes back to her maiden name I will legally change with her, but she doesn't want to.
I guess growing up I felt like changing your name was so sexist and archaic and I thought by the time I got married no one would do it anymore. Most people still do it. I don't see anything wrong with it for the people who do. It's traditional, it's nice to have the same name as DH, it simplifies things, etc.
But if you're keeping your own name, how are you handling things?
I used to be very adamant about Mrs. K is my mother in law! But I think now if people want to call me Mrs. DH's last name, I won't really get too upset about it. Like use his name socially, but keep mine legally. I think it would make FH happy and simplify things so I'm not always arguing with people.
Also, the Channa Plaque looks stupid with 'Jones-Smith' on it, so I was thinking of just having it say 'Smith', since our kids will have FH's name, and it makes it easier, but then I feel like people will think I'm taking FH's name...but then..who cares, really?
And how will we be announced at the wedding?
Usually it's 'The New Mrs and Mrs Doug and Jennifer Smith', but....I'm not smith....

My best friend got married in October and she kept her name.
She didn't have a channa plaque, but they were announced as:
'Mr. Dan Smith and Mrs. Nina Jones'

I don't want to give up my last name so I'm hyphenating my last name. My FH and I already spoke if we have children I also want their names hyphenated legally, but for school and what not they will use his last name, which is fine with! For some reason I don't want to give up my last name completely.

I went to a wedding where the bride kept her last name for professional reasons and the DJ announced them by saying 'Make some noise for the new bride and groom Michael and Jasmine' no last names and nobody even questioned it!

I am hyphenating because of professional reasons and more importantly my daughter. I adopted her solo and it's the only name ever given to her with purpose. When she is old enough to decide whether or not she wants to add his, she can. Then she'll just have 5 names because I'll never change her name. Mind you I HATE my last name and would otherwise take FH's nice name

I was planning on keeping mine and not doing a plaque.
Buuut, I am in the midst of convincing FH to shorten his last name. If he does, I will take it. Since in NY both parties can change their last names, or just take parts of one, etc.

Ok so technically NONE of us will have changed our names by the reception. That takes weeks.
Honestly I'm not changing my name, (maybe once we have kids I will), but i'm just not making a big deal out of it. If someone wants me to call me Mrs. Reinhart I'm totally cool with it.

I also do not want to change my last name, even tho it's 9 letters long! I was thinking of hyphenating it or change my last name to my middle name. Growing up I couldn't wait to change my last name, it so long and everyone mispronounces it. But now I feel it's part of me, it defines my heritage, which I am so proud of. My fiance has no problems with it either. I am so thankful for it too.

I will be taking FH's last name legally and socially, but professionally I am keeping mine. His is really difficult to pronounce and spell, and doesn't make sense to change it professionally.
