So many people like it, but I'm worried it's not really a HM place. (We've never been there.) I'm not really into bars or clubs...are there other things to do? Also, and I hope that I don't offend anyone, but I heard that it is very gay oriented. What do you ladies think?

i love it there! if we werent getting married in January that would have been our HM - actually, we are going for a second HM there but in March ( of 09)
There are great restaurants, gorgeous national parks, historical sites. . . it is our favorite place!
there is a VERY active gay community there - FH got picked up every time he went out without me

LOVE Key West. One of my fav places! I say go for it! It's a great town to just walk around. Definitely do a sunset sail if you go!
But i don't know if I'd just wanna stay there for the week.....especially if you're not into the bar scene...

totally get one Bonnie is saying BUT if you have a rental car there ( or your own - we drove down) the other neaby keys have great parks and beaches to explore! so you dont have to just stay on the island of Key West you can explore the nearby keys!

I sort of agree with you about it not being honeymoon-y. I love Key West amd been many times, but we always make it a long weekend kind of trip. Like someone mentioned, you can hop around the keys but it took us a day to do everything we wanted (we stayed in Key Largo and drove to Key West and back, stopping throughout the keys). You'd have a great time if you went, but not sure you would want to stay for 1-2 weeks at a time.

That's one of the places we're thinking about going for our HM... maybe if we do go there, we'll be there at the same time, lol!

My MOH ended up there for her HM and LOVED IT! If you want to, you can FM me with any questions and I can ask her anything you like, but she was scheduled to go on a cruise and it didn't work out...she was thrilled with Key West, however..good luck!

we were there last year and it is in some ways very gay oriented but it is not in your face or anything like that.
we liked it but we also liked the laid back athmosphere and we werent on our honeymoon. we spent time at the bars and ate a lot and drank even more.
The hotels down there are gorgeous and so is the weather and the square area but there is not much in terms of beach. maybe you can do miami and key west since they are only a few hours drive.

In Key West you feel like you're in another world! It's really pretty and if you're beachy people there will be plenty to do. I stayed at the Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada about a year ago. It was really nice! Duval St. and those sights are fun for dinner and a few drinks, but you definitely won't be forced to feel like you're on MTV Spring Break.

We accidentally stopped there during Fantasy Fest. Holy moly!!! Never again! They just had another festival there with gay parades. It was all over the place. We couldn't get away from it. It seems more like a night life type of place to me.
There are so many romantic places out there, especially if you're not into night life.

FH and I have been going to key west for the last 4 years. We are going for part of our honeymoon again this year. We are not big bar people, but it is fun to do the 'Duval Crawl' at night. The shops stay open till like 1-2 am and you can grab a drink and walk down the street. It is a very Beachy town. Very laid back. We usually rent bicycles and can get pretty much around the whole island on them!! It's actually a lot of fun. The best beach is over by the Truman Annex. Part of the old military base. There is some great snorkeling. I highly recomend doing the day trip to the dry tortuga islands! It IS AMAZING. It is the best snorkeling I have ever done and I've been to Hawaii and a bunch of the islands. We have a blast every year. FM me for more info.

Just don't go the end of October..Its fantasy fest..aka..Gay pride day..The hotel prices are insane and there is nothing but non stop partying and drinking..Not exactly the nice relaxing HM we all want..But I do love it there..For a while..I used to go there every weekend for about 3 months strait

Well I have been there four times, we just got back in the end of February, it was so beautiful and fun. As for it being gay, only bumped into two of them when I was down there.....and they were so nice. There are so many hidden coves and resorts, shops and hotels everywhere. I would very highly recommend this hotel, its called the Ocean Key Resort Hotel, its so beautiful, its right on the ocean, have the famous pier located at Mallory Square, which is amazing for the famous sunsets, you wont beleive your eyes.
