Kids or No Kids

Original post by hismrs

Ladies-

I need your help on this. My FH and I are requesting no children attend our wedding/reception. Our goal is to have a big adult party filled with drinking, good food and dancing. I just told a friend of mine and I literally heard crickets on the other end of the line.

What do you think? You can be honest, I can take it.

Im not having anyone under 18 and thats that. Everyone is going to have a comment or opinion. If that is what you and FH want then they have to deal with it. My wedding is on a friday night and ending @ 1am. I dont feel that is an affair a child should be at. JMO

same here; except i had only my 2 second cousins who are 13 and 16 and that was it. i only got flack from one friend (a guy friend of mine actually who has 3 kids) who said he wouldnt be able to come if the kids werent invited. i said oh well. he came alone and his wife stayed with the kids.

I'm usually in the minority on these threads, but here goes:

Our wedding, for all intents and purposes, was a destination wedding. Only 10-- yes 10-- guests were from the Island, and that included my parents and siblings. There was no way I could tell my cousins who flew in from Chicago, or those of DH that were coming down from Upstate for the weekend, that their young children were not welcomed to share in the celebration of our wedding.

In all, we had a dozen children b/w the ages of 14 months and 9 y/o in attendance. We made sure to have goodie bags with activities-- coloring/activity books, stencils, stamps, crayons, stickers, glow necklaces and, the big hit of the evening, crab hats. Total cost per bag was less than $8, so only slightly more expensive than the adult favors.

The kids didn't detract from the party at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I can't imagine not having them there. It was wonderful to be surrounded by ALL of our family, regardless of age.

I understand where the other side of the argument is on this. But having kids at our wedding was the right choice for us.

Honestly I don't know why people would want to bring their kids to a wedding, most I know would want a night away from the kiddies to enjoy themselves. It is your wedding, if you don't want kids there, don't invite them.
We're only having 2 kids at our wedding and they are the FGs. We only know two other couples that have kids and neither want their kids there anyways. I was pretty lucky that we really don't have kids in our families and most of our friends don't have kids so this was a non issue for me.

...it's like my dogs...i love them but i don't feel like they belong everywhere cause not everyone enjoys dogs! To me it's not a matter of kids belonging at a wedding or not...but a bride's personal choice...and people should respect BOTH the choice of having them or NOT having them at their wedding...

the only kids at our wedding were the BP kids...who also happened to be a niece & nephews....we did hire & pay for babysitting for our OOT guests (which i thought was a nice gesture)...i found it rude when people got upset i was not having kids at the wedding...if i don't want kids of my own, what makes you think i want yours running around my wedding?

How did you go about finding a babysitter?????
i need help finding one.
TIA

i personally dont like kids at a wedding. we actually have 5 kids (niece, 2 nephews and FH's 2 sons)

they are in the wedding, will be at ceremony, CH and 1st hour of reception and then they will be going home so we have 3 hours without them

Your day, your budget, your choice! I'm opting for NO kids - all my cousins have little ones and they are so mis-behaved I couldn't IMAGINE having them there and throwing a fit or a tantrum or whining and ruining my day (and I'm a teacher, go figure!) There's just one girl - my cousin had her when she was 16 - who is special and I've been close with her, so I wanted her at the wedding. Solution? She's a jr. bridesmaid. That way, no one can say anything. Shes invited cause she's in the party. Good luck! Whatever you decide, just STICK TO IT!!!!

I'm not having kids either. Parents have enough time to look for a sitter.

Good luck :)

I will not have children at the reception but they are more than welcome at the ceremony. They will also be invited to the day after brunch.

The drama has just started on this one for me. I feel your pain.

For us its not a big deal because no one has kids yet, except for FBIL and FSIL, but their kids are in the wedding party, so they're the only ones who will be coming. No one else has kids.

its your wedding- do what you want.

ETA: If you have any children in the bridal party- they should be invited since they are apart of the wedding.
Also, if you are inviting your family from out of town and they have children, it might be nice to invite them as well- especially if they have to fly in for the wedding.

No kids!!

Personally, I think weddings are an adult affair, especially if your wedding is at night. Children will get tired, disruptive, etc. We are not having kids at our wedding, no exceptions. Most of our guests are actually happy about that, they are looking forward to a night out without the kids.

It's a wedding, not a circus!

this is personal preference. i have a lot of kids in our family, it just wouldnt have been the same without them. a few parents had planned to take the kids back to a hotel with a sitter but actually never made it cuz the kids were having such a great time! (and my wedding ended at 1am). if the kids fell asleep, the parents just left them in the stroller. most were still up and playing with each other. some of my favorite pro pics are with the kids in them (some in my album). it was a lot of fun!

we originally wanted to kids but ended up with about 5 so i don't think it's going to be a big deal...and they'll prob look really cute in pics!

It's your choice. Whatever decision you make, stick with it. If you tell people no children and then allow some, you may annoy other guests.

We're not having children. No FG or RB. FH has a lot of neices and nephews. I think everyone is looking forward to a night away from the kids. We are working with everyone to make sure that they have arrangements for their children. I would rather hire someone to take care of them then invite them to our wedding.

Honestly, it's your wedding and you should do whatever you and FH want!

Having said that, are there a lot of children in your families? Do a lot of your friends have kids? If so, many people will be hurt and offended... but then again, it is your wedding!

We have way too many kids in our families (cousins and friends have kids ) so we're inviting kids of our CLOSEST friends and relatives only.

I did exatly the same.
