FH and i had a joint savings account for a while now. I just recently closed out my own checking account and was added to fh's.
I have to tell you.. I am HATING IT... I have to share the money that I earn.. I may seem selfish but it's rough..
If you haven't already done this, i would suggest doing it before the wedding..I thought it wasn't going to be a big deal..But it most certainly is...
Sorry needed to vent

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
I totally understand. It takes time getting used to sharing an account, but it will become second nature years from now

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
I can totally relate. I'm not going to close out my personal checking account though--I'm just going to transfer some of my $ into our joint checking to pay for our living expenses and some into joint savings but the rest is staying in my account. I work hard for my $$ and even though I love my FH, I can't--and won't--share all of my $$ with him.

RIGHT ON! I will probably do the same.

I think we are definitely in the minority. My parents think I'm crazy for not wanting to pool my $ with FH's.

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
FH and i already have a joint checking & savings--and i do all the bills and such. he likes it that way. we consider it OUR money...when we get paid. but everyone is different
that being said, we do have a separate individual account each...for savings. he has his credit union thru his job, and i have a savings account with ING. i think it helps to have SOMETHING separate to remain feeling like an indiviudal

we both have our own accounts, and have 1 joint account.....you'll get used to it eventually, it will just take time, hang in there!

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
Me and FH have been doing it for a while. At first it was hard to get used to but we actually learned to compromised with one another much better. we have been doing our bills together for a long time and we usually consolidate our $ to make the most of it so it just endedup being better for us. Good Luck!!!

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
a few months after we moved in together we combined our checking & savings to make things easier for our shared living expenses & savings for the wedding. it was probably the hardest thing I went through with FH- I was very used to being in complete control of my $... but in the end we learned how to share the accounts & not drive each other crazy. It works itself out over time & with much communication. $ is always a sensitive manner, but I figured if we were going to share the rest of our lives together we had better be able to learn how to share our finances. In the end I'm glad we did it & it makes life easier since we do share a home.

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
We did the same thing! I had my payroll going into his account and he was spending his and mine faster than i could pay our bills! But now I manage his money from another account and give him an 'allowance' (he just doesnt know it yet)

Re: KIND OF WEDDING RELATED: CHECKING ACCOUNT
I don't think joint accounts are for everyone, and you definitely have to be ready for it. FH and I were going to have our own checking and savings account and a joint checking and savings account - so at least 6 accounts. We recently bought a house and realized it's just going to be too complicated to work that out - we wont' be able to put as much away in the savings as we'd like, our car insurance is now commingled and next year when we share health insurance, etc ... It'll get even more difficult. We finally just sucked it up and have a joint checking and joint savings - that's it. We're even canceling all of our credit cards and only having joint ones. It's just what will work best for us, but we also make about the same amount and have similar spending habits.
