Knitting

OK I am so frustrated right now! Already threw my yarn and needles on the florr 3 times and almost stabbed my DH with the needles
I am trying to teach myself how to knit. My brother got me the book 'Taught Myself Knitting' for Christmas. The book is confusing me so I went online and learned how to do the Casting On part. Then I tried to move on to knitting stitch but my loops are too small and the Cast On part keeps coming off the needle Plus, I have 2 strings hanging down at the end of my cast on part when the book and online show only one?!?! SO I guess my question is after you do the cast on, how do you end that part? because they have only 1 string and I have 2, how do I get rid of the second one?
Any advice/suggestion PLEASE I am ready to give up.

Re: Knitting

You should have 2. One you knit with, the other just hangs out on the end of the garment. Also, don't pull so tight when you cast on. If you leave it just a little bit looser, it will be a lot easier to knit into the stitches.

Another note about the first row. If you cast on 20 stitches (for example) it will look like you have 21 stitches. The last '2' stitches are knit together at the same time.

My mom gave me a good knitting book called 'The Knitter's Companion' that I keep in my knitting bag. It won't teach you to knit, but it explains certain stitches and appreviations that you might need to know as you progress.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Knitting

Keep trying!!! i did the same thing about 3 weeks ago and now i am knitting much better. Just give it time and keep playing with it. I learned from a book and then FMIL came over and showed me some more today. Does anyone in your family know how to knit??? Learning from someone was much easier than the book. Hope things are going better.

Look online more for better pictures to help.
good luck

Re: Knitting

I finally can do the basic knitting now.
I am having a problem with ending a row and starting a new row though Is there something special I should be doing here? Right now I am just doing one stitch, the garter stitch.
