KWR: Hair Dye

So i had highlights (i have brown hair and i had blondish highlights). they have since grown out and i want to go back to brown for the wedding.
i always go to the salon though
if i buy the box hair dye in a shade of brown will it dye my hair uniform over whats left of my highlights? or will the highlighted part come out a diff color?

sorry im clueless about over the counter hair dye lol

well i have similiar coloring. ive done that before and it usually covers most of the blonde but it seems like the blonde part is always a tad bit lighter brown than the rest, however it doesnt look like highlights of lighter brown (like defined streaks), it looks just like the natural coloring of your hair, doest that make sense? if your hair was a lot darker than the highlights in the first place, then there would be a noticable difference though when you dyed it and for that you would want to go to a salon.

with your case, if the parts that were still a little lighter bothered you, doing another bottle a few weeks later should do the job. (just not to soon, ive done that and burned my scalp )

eta!...if you are dying your hair though a darker brown than your natural color be really careful because anything darker than light brown can sometimes turn orange when going over blonde. i had a terrible experience once but my hair was also like bleach bleach blonde and i tried to dye it medium brown and it turned bright orange, so i then had to dye it black to go over the orange...hence i burnt my scalp. since then, its all salon for me, lol

I couldn't agree more. I am still growing out some reddish hair thanks to dying my hair dark brown last year after having tons of highlights.

You have to be careful if you are going to do it urself, especially if you have bleach in ur hair if you use and ash it can turn green/greyish. I wouldnt do it myself and take the chance its worth going and just getting a single process at the salon

Jackie,
I just went through this - so I decided to do a wash! I used Clairol Natural Instincts -its a ammonia-free wash and it washes out in 6 weeks (just incase you don't like it). I think it came out great and it was the first time I dyed my own hair.

hope that helps

ITA. While you have a good chance it'll come out fine and just look like natural highlights and lowlights of your hair, I wouldn't risk it. I know previous posters also mentioned sometimes it comes out orangey over the blonde. I can attest to that! Unfortunately, I'd suck it up and spend the money. HTH!
