KWR: Is anyone certified in answering tax questions?

This might be a dumb question, but just to make sure...

When I file my taxes, I file with my married name, but check that i'm filing as a single person since I didn't get married until 1/2/2010, right?

if you own property you would still do separate taxes since you are not married until 2010.

I'm a CPA....

You file based on your marriage status on the last day of the year. Since you were single as of 12/31/09 you file single for 2009.

You can both split the mortgage interest and real estate taxes; but you should see if it works out better if only one of you take it or if you split it.

Are both of your names on the deed? If not, then only the person whose name is on the deed can deduct the real estate taxes.

Thanks! We don't own real estate (we rent) so that's not a problem. As for my last name, I file under my maiden name? I could have sworn I filed under my married name since I changed it legally.

but since you only got married in 2010... your name wouldnt have been legally changed until 1.2.2010... for the entire year of 2009 you used your maiden name

You file under the name that you have on file with Social Security or else it will get bounced back.

So if you went to SS and changed your name, then put THAT name on your tax return. They must match.
