my son has been on nutramagin for 6 months now. he was on soy lactose free for a month and he was very gassy and cranky so we put him on nutramagin. at our last dr visit my dr told me to give him a little bit of vanilla icecream to test out his dairy tolerence. i gave him a small tablespoon of icecream at 10 am at 12pm he had his bottle and at 1pm he was throwing up all over me and Hempstead turnpike as we crossed the street to DHs office. Needless to say that was the one day i didnt pack an extra outfit so do you think the icecream was just to cold or too much for him? i am not trying that agian!!
this morning i gave him 2 oz of soy and then 5oz of his regular and he was a little gassy today but then again i could of just been sensitive to it. do you think 2oz would make him gassy? i dont think i am going to it again. i think i will stick with the nutramagin. what do you girls think?

Re: lactose questions...
My daughter has been on Nutramigen for a long time. She had a problem with the milk based formula and also with the soy. The dr told me I could start slowly introducing milk. Well, every time I gave her the tinyest amount of milk, she either spit up or threw up so I stopped the milk right away and she was fine. I waited a few weeks and then I slowly started introducing LActaid milk. She's been doing great on that. I am guessing that she had a problem with the lactose in the milk because she's fine now. It doesn't hurt to try it out. Good luck.
In answer to your question: Yes, I think 2 oz could make him gassy. I gave my daughter 1 oz of regular milk and she threw up everything she ate.

Re: lactose questions...
You are suppose to start VERY slowly. Day 1 only give him 1.2 ounce, give him only 1/2 ounce for 2-3 days, by day 3 increase to 1 ounce (for the entire day), do that for 2 days, then increase it by .5 pounces per day until his bottle is completely whole milk. If you add to much too fast you can creat additional gastro problems. I just introdcused my daughter to milk in November and she was 20 months old and that is how the allergist from Mt Sinai in Manhattan forced me to do it. If he's throwing up, chances are you have to stop dairy all together, the sideaffects shouyld not be so pronounced if he is beginning to tolerate it. FM me if you need more info, my daughter had a sever milk allergy and was off all dairy until 20 months, we had lots of throw up and fussy time.

also, keep in mind the longer you don't expose him to dairy the more likely he will outgrow it sooner, if you start too early he will be back at sqaure 1. My doctor never recommends a baby who was on a special diet for an allergy to be introduced to the alergen food until at least 20months, this is the time that he can almost guarantee they have outgrown it as long as there has been no exposure.

Re: lactose questions...
Has he ever had any dairy prodcuts? Lactose is different than being allergic to the milk protein in dairy foods. My daughter was strictly dairy.
If he is on nutramagin I would say no dairy until he is much older, especially since now he has been exposed. Also, the milk protein comes in many forms, casein, whey, lactylate, cream of tarter, etc. You have to really read the labels. I breatfed for 1 year and I myself had to be off of all dairy so my dauhgter was not exposed. Lots of doctors are not well versed in food allergies such as dairy, wheat, etc in infacts they are more concerned and concentrated on the nut allergy since it is so dangerous. Stay with soy, I can give you my allergists name if you want, it takes 8 months to get an appt with him, but it;s worth the wait, he is the top pediatric allergist in the WORLD! I kid you not.
