Ladies - help me out here with a dilemma...

Ladies - help me out here with a dilemma...

I despise being called sweety or honey by people other than maybe my grandma. I can deal with it if you are the age of my mom or grandma, but thats about it.

I work with a woman who is my age who calls me sweety and honey - I tolerate it because she is my supervisor, and she is very sincere when she calls people it.

But a teacher I work with who is maybe in her mid 20's has JUST begun calling me sweety, sweetheart, honey, etc.

I am not sure what has warranted the sudden terms of endearment, but everytime she does it, I swear not only do I cringe, but the child inside me curls up into a ball and begins to plot her death.

Now - I feel its early enough in the name calling behavior to address it, but how? I see this teacher once a week, sometimes twice. I do not want to be a b!tch about it - but it needs to stop. Like right away.

What do I say????

Simple, tell her nicely you prefer NOT to be called that.

If it doesn't stop, be mean.

If it still doesn't stop, be mean and make a complaint...technically by asking her to stop and her not stopping, she's harrassing you.

edit: is she southern by any chance? in the south, we just say it like you would call a kid 'kiddo.'

Tell her you don't feel comfortable with her calling you that, that those terms are reserved for you mom and grandma. Tell her she can call you by your first name.

oh, I am famous for this. I call everyone sweetie, honey, darlin' etc. If it's cute and silly I use it - it is a term of endearment AND it's because I teach 250 kids and sometimes just can't remember a name. While the names of the annoying, needy or exceedingly helpful students are always at the front of my mind the kids that are quiet and behave well I rarely have to speak too. This means that their name remains a mystery to me for the first year and sometimes even into the next. yeah, I have to work on that - I really do suuck!

So, being the chicken that I am, I would let one of her co-workers know or slip a note in her mailbox: 'I am sentimental about certain nicknames and I would really appreicate it if you could just refer to me by my own name. I know it sounds silly but it brings up memories that can be painful. Thanks so much for understanding. XXX'

What do you think?

I would make a joke out of it like 'what are you my grandmother. My grandmother calls me sweetie.' Humor, in a nice way, works every time.

It's condescending.
You should challenge her to a duel.
