Ladies with Condos/Co-Ops

FH and I are thinking about doing this for the first year or two...any suggestions.

Where do you girls live?

Re: Ladies with Condos/Co-Ops

We're currently renting an apartment in Kew Gardens, but FBIL has a condo/co-op (can't remember which) a few blocks away. It was a great deal, beautiful building, and it's a very nice neighborhood

Personally, we are going to continue to rent for the time being only because we don't have the money for a down payment! But in a few years we'll probably go the condo/co-op route

there are some GREAT new condos being built up in Astoria Queens. brand new with parking inside the building. They are all residental blocks with shopping just blocks away. The condos are around 35-38 streets and broadway to 30th ave

have you seen how much some of them cost though. The one on ditmars and 45th street has had to low their prices recently bc they had problems. Well for 1 they were supposed to open up 2 years ago and ppl had already put deposits down expecting to move in so some sued. But we spoke to an agent working for the pistilli building, she showed us layouts of many different apartments and pricing. They wanted $350-400k for the small 1 bedroom, and these were reduced prices. Some of the other new condo's being built they want about $500-600k

We have a co-op (well FH has a co-op ) Honestly - it's not really worth it if you only want to do it for a few years or whatever. They are pretty expensie to purchase (some like ours are selling for 350k - we have a duplex, 3 bedroom - so it's fairly large) but on top of that you have to pay maintenence.... which can be as much as rent sometimes! ugh!

I'd say go for a house... or rent until the market gets better.

We live in Glen Oaks - it's a nice area and I love the place - but he's had it for awhile - he is really itching to get a house... I'm trying to convince him we could comfortably have a kid here.

hehe anyway good luck and happy hunting

I was wondering how much those would cost. The windows look like school windows. They've been building those for over three years!

i would agree with you..we looked into the co-op thing too but decided to rent for a year or two until we can get a house..they ar etoo pricey and with maintenance fees on top..its like paying rent and a mortgage!

yeah i have the exact price list somewhere at home. Alot of ppl also went to check them out, theyve been having open house every weekend. many didnt like it, they said they used cheap stuff. The prices are a bit much, especially for the space, it was about $400k for like 700sq feet or maybe smaller. Its not worth it for that.

Yeah the windows always threw me off, they are so tiny

I've heard the same things from a few people, they are extremely overpriced for the quality of the apartments. The owners are known to use/build with cheap materials bc they think people will renovate anyway. If I'm spending that much on a condo I would expect it to have quality floors, cabinets, etc. I wouldn't touch those condos.

They aren't even near the train station, thats about a 15 block walk to the train so it;s not worth it. And the ones by Astoria Park by Pistilli are even more

Re: Ladies with Condos/Co-Ops

We live in a co-op in Roslyn Heights. FH bought it a few years ago because renting was comprable to a mortgage (at that time) and felt it was an investment. The only thing that ****** was the parking but we both got spots within a few months and there is parking on the street. Nice neighborhood and pretty quiet.
