LapTop contest and Haiti

LapTop contest and Haiti

I would first like to personally thank all who participated in the laptop contest. The devastation in Haiti has me numb. I had a little reality check this morning after speaking with my mom. She works with about 40 Haitian people in Southern Florida. Wonderful people who sacrificed not seeing their families for a while so they could come to this country, make a few dollars to send home and then return one day to better conditions. Over the past few days mom says there have been screams coming different areas of the hotel (she works for a large hotel chain). Haitian people waiting to hear the fate of their family members, working to keep their minds off the tragedy at home answer their cell phone to hear the most horrific words they dreaded could be their reality - I'm sorry, your husband, your wife, your son, your daughter, your mother, your father or even their best friend was found dead this afternoon. Mom tells me now five people she works with have lost their entire family! I can not imagine what must be going through their minds. To say this is so unfair is an understatement. Nothing can ever make up for a lost life, can it?

I ask you now to think about your own life. The people you love and who love you. Cherish them like never before! Live is so precious and at the same time, so fragile.

And yes, I wrote this in an attempt to tug at your heart strings. If not our contest then in someway please show your compassion and humanity to help the people of Haiti. I am doing research to make sure the funds we collect will go to the Haitian people in its entirety! No administration fees etc. If I cannot find a charity to meet these goals then I will (at my expense) fly to Haiti with money in hand to distribute it to needy people directly.

I thank you for your time in reading this post and thank you for your generosity, compassion and humanity!

All The Best!
Ron

Ron --

Thank you for organizing such a needed effort. And, I especially thank you for taking the time to research what is the best organization to contribute to.

My best friend (and MOH) and I have been talking about this as well. Her mom has a non-profit organization that helps to provide for Haitian children and education efforts. And we have been brainstorming about where to contribute and where the money would best be served.

While the Red Cross and Unicef and other organizations are amazing at what they do, they are not perfect. And if we plan to donate money to Haiti, I only ask that the money go to benefit the people of Haiti in their rebuilding and getting the infrastructure to have a sustainable society.

There is a lot of money going to the relief effort, and it is needed!!! Don't get me wrong!! But at some point it is not longer 'relief' and it is building the infrastructure needed to 're-live' and move on...hopefully, i pray, in a state better than before.

Those that have passed from such a tragedy should not go unremembered. Instead, their memories should be honored as a turning point of when other countries looked to Haiti in support to build them up..and not tear them down.

If you need help researching organizations, let me know!
