I am going tomorrow for our marriage license....I dunno if I should hyphenate or just completely take his my FH last name.
I would like to keep my last name more for my dad. He passed away a few years ago and it kind of makes me want to keep his last name.
What do you ladies think or feel?

Re: Last Name Change
You should do what makes you feel the best I ended up keeping the initial of my maiden last name as my middle name (I didn't have one) and then took his name. This way I don't lose my old last name. Both of hte last names are pretty long so I couldn't hyphenate, but if you can go for it!

Re: Last Name Change
i wanted to hyphenate but chose not to because it really bothered FH that i didnt want to actually take his name entirely
if it doesnt bother your FH, and you feel strongly about keeping your name, then go for it.

Re: Last Name Change
I changed my last name to DH's last name. <3
But I know a couple girls who changed their middle name to their maiden name and then took their FH's last name. HTH!

Re: Last Name Change
i changed my name and took DH's last name. I never thought to do otherwise, I always knew I would take his last name. However, for awhile there, I teased him and said I would hyphenate or keep my last name as my new middle name and he would get so upset. Last week, I asked him, why would you be upset if i hadn't taken his last name. DH said he would have been heartbroken, that to him, it felt like i didn't love him enough to take all of him and have my name be an outward symbol of our new comittment for each other.
To me, and this is JMO, what i would feel for a deceased parent will always remaiin with me, i wouldn't need to keep the last name to still feel close to that person. It will always be a part of who you are, and its the love you feel for your father inside that will always keep you close to him, not a name.

Re: Last Name Change
I kept my last name for that specific reason. I am an only child and it meant a lot to my dad

Re: Last Name Change
If you keep your name now, you CAN change it later. It's just a bit more of a hassle (needs to be done through the courts) and isn't free.

Re: Last Name Change
I think if DH had been hurt that I didn't take his name, I probably would not have married him. I think it is selfish to expect someone to give up their identity. Plenty of ladies want to do it, and that is fine- it is their decision. I just feel like DH wouldn't give up his name for me......so why is it a big deal if I don't give it up for him?
That said, I think you need to do what will make you happy. And if keeping part of your last name means that much to you, he should respect it

Re: Last Name Change
I kept mine for no real reason... lol ill change it when i have kids...
I learned from watching the kardashian wedding that Khloe made Kardashian her Middle Name and odom is her official last name.
My Sister in law is against changing her name, and my brother in law was a bit upset about it (totally unlike DH who does not care) But in her case, she is egyptian and her DH is Hispanic, so she felt as if she was loosing her Heritage. at the end he understood.
so talk it over with your FH and do what suits you best, everyones situation is different.

Re: Last Name Change
I'm taking his and it's actually a little freaky now that it's really happening, lol!
My best friend gave her son her mom's maiden name as his middle name, I thought that was a nice way to keep it going through the years

My FH would be hurt too if I didn't take his last name. That's why I'm going to change mine. Plus if I hyphenated it, it would be way too long!!
