Lawn question...

Lawn question...

Does anyone know what to do to a lawn and when to keep it looking thick and green? We just moved in a couple of weeks ago, and we've never had our own lawn, so I'd like to do the proper steps at the right time of year. I want to have a nice lawn when my son starts walking around. Since I live in NC I know the products might be different, but I'm pretty sure it's the same steps. Thanks girls!!!

Re: Lawn question...

try this website: garden web

there are different forums for all gardening interests, including lawns. i found it very helpful.

we try not to use chemical fertilizers like scott's on our lawn. i don't want my dog rolling around in chemicals. the garden center was helpful in recommending various organic fertilizers.

i believe that in the fall you should aerate the lawn, fertilize/lay down compost, and overseed. that way its ready for the spring. try to mow high (a high level on your mower, instead of cutting it really short)- it discourages weeds. again, i learned it all from that website- i had no idea what to do in the beginning!

If you do not mind chemicals, Scotts is the way to go..it has all the steps for each season!

Re: Lawn question...

i would say check out your local home deopt or lowes too...they offer classes on it - i took one at home depot caleld curb appeal...i wound up being the only one who showed up so it was one to one and the guy was very knowledgeable..he did everything from tell me the right types of greenery and palnts for our soil, sunlight/shade, to how to create a nicer garden area and patio. it was free and great! (i think it was a sat morning but even if you go into the store, someone there should know, particularly the people who have worked there a while and really love it!)
