Lawyers

I am a recent grad who took the bar in July & was wondering if any of the firms you work at were hiring entry-level associates. I have been searching but really with no luck & it is getting really frustrating. Please FM if your firm is or if you have any advice on how to approach this. I am interested in work in a general practice firm but would prefer not to do personal injury or criminal work.
TIA

Re: Lawyers

My brother worked at Sullivan and Cromwell and Mayer, Brown, Rowe and Maw, both in NYC. I think he got both through his internships and on campus recruiting in law school though (one summer he interned with the DA and then the next at Sullivan and Cromwell). Is your law school career center of any help? Did you do internships the past two summers?

Re: Lawyers

That is my next approach I have been doing emplawyernet & lawcrossing.com & craigslist but I send out about 1 a day. the frustrating part is getting nothing in return no rejection letters, no calls it is bad. It is goign to get to a point where I have to wait till Nov & FH & I could use the money although we are doing ok with his salary alone, it is just alot of stress for him. I wonder if I shoudl just get a job doing whatever, just to have some money & keep looking for a job. Who knows it is so frustrating.

Re: Lawyers

did you try a temp agency? i've heard of people getting temp jobs doing things like document review until they can find an attorney position.

Re: Lawyers

My FI joined www.lawjobs.com (free) and www.lawcrossing.com ($19.95 per month).
Also check out your law school's website.
Another (and much more $$$$) site is www.legalauthority.com.

Good luck! I know it's a hard time to find a law job now. My FI graduated law school in May 2004 and it took until April 2005 to get a job.

Re: Lawyers

My DH contacted ALL of his old employers (he interned at various offices in the Attorney Generals Office, and at the DEC) and asked them if there was anywhere that they would recommend. Each employer has been VERY helpful in sharing contacts, ideas and leads. It hasn't gotten any jobs yet, but it has gotten a few interviews. I think I told you in my FM DH decided that if nothing pans out by Oct. or so he will begin doing some temp legal work. I know what you mean about the frustration though, we are fine on my salary but come Dec I think we have to start paying back loans, and that will make things much tighter Good Luck!

I think the reason why you're not getting anything back is because a lot of firms start recruiting for next year's summer associates in August. August is when a lot of the schools have their job fairs and recruiting department's aren't that big, so I'm sure this keeps them really busy. But this shouldn't discourage you - it just means there'll be delay. If I had to guess, the recruiting departments probably won't even start filling their empty slots until late October because that's when recruiting for next summer tends to start quieting down, and October's actually when a lot of people start working too so they know if anyone's changed their mind. I would also call recruiting departments to see if they need some people. I know the legal market's picking up so the situation's better than a few years ago. And a few of my classmates recently obtained clerkships from new judges so I'm sure others have too and that's bound to create some openings. I hope this gives you hope. In the meantime, a temp job might be a good idea because they're probably focusing their recruitment efforts on next year, for now. Good luck!

Re: Lawyers

It all changes after you get the bar results. that was when I started to get lots of interviews, call backs, etc. What I did before that was sort of a waste of time. My first full time job was with a federal government agency, and it was a great place to start. I now have my own small practice. I'm not hiring an associate yet, though.

Re: Lawyers

Here is a question....DH graduated just in May took the bar and is awaiting his results. He just interviewed at a small law firm yesterday and although the lawyer interviewing seemed to like him he said that the pay is $35,000-40,000!!! I understand that DH isn't admittied and he is going to talk about the possibility of when that salary would get to be reviewed again, but we are worried that IF he gets the job and doesn't accept it because of the money it may be a mistake (so far job offers havent been pouring in) That said we have over a 100,000 dollars in Law School loans and I literally might have to take an extra part time job because his salary is so low. My question is (after way too long of an explanation) Would you take the low paying job, and have to make LOTS of sacrifices, or wait around to potentially get a better paying job (not knowing exactly when that job would come around)

For what i have been told by friends there is usually a bonus given by some firms when you pass the bar. He might want to ask if that is the case with this job if he gets it. Good luck!!
