Those that paid someone to lay floor tiles...how much does this cost per square foot? That's usually how they estimate right?

Re: Laying Tiles
Ours did it differently, he gave us a set price which included tile up to $1.75 per sq foot, and if the tile we picked was more expensive we had to pay the difference.

I vaguely remember asking someone once...when I wasn't serious about doing it - and I think they said $6 a square foot - does not include the tile.

It can be...it depends on what type you want installed. If it is just ceramic tile, I would guess atleast 4 dollars a square foot, but I am not sure of the going price on LI. Marble and granite costs more to install. Most tile setters (atleast in our area) do not include the tile or grout in the laying charge. I know my in-laws on LI do tile, but I am not sure what they get for the going rate.
Edited to say that my husband is a tile setter.

yabbobay, YES way!! I was quoted 7-8 per sq. ft. WITHOUT tile.. It's crazy!

Wow, I didn't think to ask if it was going to include the grout! Jeez.... Good to know! I'm looking to have either slate or just ceramic. No granite -- not yet LOL!

Re: Laying Tiles
In that case, you may also want to ask about prep materials depending on what is down on the floor now and what is under that...
Also, you may want to check to see if thinset is included (adhesive for the tile.)
Probably the best thing to ask is what exactly do you have to provide for them to do the job. When my husband does a quote for a job, he actually lays out exactly what they need to provide and how much it costs.
Hope that helps!

Re: Laying Tiles
is your house on a slab or do you need a mud floor pulled? what condition is your subfloor in? Do you have existing tile that needs to be removed? Is the tile being laid in a random pattern or diagonal? These are all things that will cause the price to be higher.

Re: Laying Tiles
We have pergo on there now...I think it's on slab. Does that make it less expensive?

Re: Laying Tiles
if you had a basement or were talking about doing a second story you would need a mud floor which is more expensive then thinset on a slab.
