Legal question about providing last 4 # ss and birthdate.

Hi,
THis may seem like a silly question... I posted earlier about trying to buy a new chevy truck.... I found a forum for the specific truck and some of the members state they can provide a certificate which will get money off.... all I need to do is provide my email address... birthdate... and last 4 digits of my ss#. Does this sound safe or should I stay away? It seems many people have already done this and been happy, but I don't want to get myself into trouble. Help.

Do NOT send that sort of information to anyone, especially via the internet. It's not difficult for them to get the rest of your identifying information and steal your identity. What kind of certificate is this that they need this information anyway?

Thanks! It's called a driveway certificate, where if you are buying a gm vehicle, it supposedly gives you 1% discount under invoice. I was hoping it would be safe to do, but I didn't think so... and I am the paranoid type, I would rather be safe than sorry. Thanks for answering me!

I've never heard of this, but just tried to do some research on it. It seems valid, but I'd still be careful about giving out your info to some stranger on the internet. Can you get the certificate directly from GM?

Thank you so much for your help. I also tried to do some research and it does seem legit... but that doesn't mean the person trying to help us all out is legit. I would rather be safe than sorry.... I just said to DH that we can at least mention the certificate and say we could possibly get one and maybe they would be able to get it for us, without the hassle if they saw we were truly interested. Oh no...you and my FH are both nutty he wanted me to sign up for something online that wanted my SS#. Heck no, gf don't do it. I don't care if it's George Bush personally asking you to give him your SS# and the country depended on it. With your SS# finding out everything else about you and stealing your identity would be a piece of cake!!!

Well, I was almost nutty! I thought because they only wanted the last 4 numbers of the ss # that it MIGHT be safe, but I was leaning more towards not doing it..... I would worry for the rest of my life that I did the wrong thing if I had done it.
