I was just wondering if anyone has gotten married by the state months , weeks, or years before getting married by the catholic church? If yes, does the church give you a hard time? will they still marry you?

Re: legally married before religiously married
I guess it depends on the religion
I was married in civil court exactly one year to my wedding. We had a 'father' do our wedding he had NO problems with it.
I guess you should ask.
Mostly the opinion I got was the court one wasn't real in the eyes of God but the church one was.
Whatever.. I literally made $2300 by married my husband a year early. Immediate insurance refund for adding him on to my policy, tax break and other consolidations. We'd been together 5 years and lived together for 2. This helped us immensly. We did no ring exchange because I wanted my Dad to be there.

The Catholic church shouldn't have a problem with a legal marrige taking place first. They just don't recognize the two of you as being married in the eyes of God. Other than that it's not a problem. I know some people who got legally married first and then had a church wedding.

If you get legally married first, then you are married. You can't have a wedding ceremony...instead they'll do a ceremony similar to a vow renewal. I would FM carlsbride she's very familiar with Catholic Dogma. But I know for a fact that city hall wedding = no church wedding. My priest was adamant that we just get a license and no ceremony and DH's brother was married in civil court and had a 'renewal' a year later...no one was the wiser because it looks and sounds like a wedding but his wife told me that it wasn't a wedding.
I would definitely check with you particular parish.
