let's talk about a touchy subject

I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are, because I just wrote an article on it.

It's personal, so don't be offended---just thought I'd stir up some conversation and I'm curious as to others' opinions.

Does religion influence your feelings about birth control? How so?

I'm still trying to figure out if it influences mine after writing this article

Ok I think I have an answer for my own question now:

I'd say that I don't think my religion (Catholicism) really influences how I think about birth control. I think that when FH & I start to have a family, we would consider trying 'natural family planning' just because we want to have more than one kid and it would eliminate the need for anything else.

I've never used birth control pills and I never will---I don't think that they are 'abortive.' I just don't like the idea of a pill regulating something natural, and I don't like all of the side effects. That isn't meant to offend--I don't care if other people use it lol---it's just not right for me.

I was surprised though that part of the reason that the Church is opposed to BC is because it is a pill regulating something natural + all the side effects. I didn't know that until a week ago, but I had thought that for a long time. So even though I'm not 'influenced' by religion, some of my thoughts are along the same line.

Yes and no...I believe in a woman's right to choose...and I also believe that God would not want someone to bring a baby into the world when they were not prepared for it (monetarily or emotionally or otherwise). I think that God values life...but that the quality of that life is also important.

i'm catholic... but believe a lot of things are outdated.

people were getting married and having babies when they were 16. earlier a long time ago.

its your body's natural clock to want to hump something when you're 16-26 and in today's world... a lot of people aren't ready to be married between those ages.

well said
I'm a fairly (liberally) observant Jew but I think for things that other 'observant religious' people/groups may find wrong or sinful - like birth control/abortion - my belief is that God gave us free will and the ability to choose for ourselves and this is a personal choice totally and entirely. and in my own decisions and thoughts on this topic religion hasn't ever really even crept into the mix.

to be honest, i considered the the natural family planning as a BC method.....but then we went to precana and they showed us a video on NFP

idk who else saw that video....but all the couples on it said 'it worked for them'.....meanwhile they had 6 kids!!!!

lilke, reallly???? couldnt they do a better job at the marketing of the video. maybe if they had a bunch of couples say 'it worked' and only had 2 or 3 kids, i would have considered it even more

but when every couple had a little football team of kids, DH and i looked at eachother, like o my.......

Not even a little bit.

And boy did I laugh and laugh and laugh at pre-cana when they tried to sell us on natural family planning. Not because I think natural family planning is a joke, but the priest was like a used car salesman.

Yes, I found that quite unusual too.

I actually like pre-cana...I think that the Church has good intentions and I agree with 95% of what they have said at pre-cana. However, I didn't understand how they could show a video where people say 'it works' yet they have a million kids each.

Forgive me if im wrong, but arent catholics supposed to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. Because if you go by that, then all those families of 6 were just blessed by god

Yes, but they are still promoting a form of birth control-it is just a natural one. The video states that natural family planning is 99 percent effective. However, all of the families in the video have quite a many number of children. Therefore, it is questionable as to how it is 99 percent effective.

Perhaps these particular families just chose to have sex during the 'fertile' time quite frequently and leave it in God's hands. However, they do not state that. It just seems odd that if they wanted to promote a form of birth control, particularly one that is said to be 99 percent effective, then they would have some families on these videos that are a small size.

or they could just be choosing to have large families. perhaps if they didnt practice natural family planning they'd be 19 kids and counting.

Right, I said that. I said 'Perhaps these particular families just chose to have sex during the 'fertile' time quite frequently and leave it in God's hands.'

It just seems unusual that the video would not mention that they chose to have these large families when they are saying the method is 99 percent effective. I'm not saying it IS contradictory, but it appears contradictory, so I feel that they should address that seeming contradiction.
