Levittown???

So what are everyone's thought's on Levittown? We have found several affordable homes here and are trying to figure out why? My parents both grew up in Bethpage, around the corner, and can't figure the price difference between the 2 neighborhoods? Any thoughts????? TIA!

Re: Levittown???

There was a big debate on Levittown not too long ago.

I have no direct experience with Levittown .. but it's not a town I've ever had a negative opinion about .. I've always thought of it as the typical middle-class neighborhood .. but many times when I've had that opinion on towns in question on this site .. many people end up trashing those towns.

My best advice .. spend time in the area you are looking at .. check out the little shops that line the area .. go for drives through the neighborhoods .. try to get a tour through the schools .. to really know a neighborhood .. you have to spend time there .. and you are the best judge of what will work for you!

Re: Levittown???

Me and DH just bought a house in Levittown a few months ago. I love it here and it was the most affordable area for us. A few girls on this board just bought homes here also. I think it has a bad reputation from years ago maybe? (I grew up in Queens so I have just heard stories recently about Levittown.)There are a lot of young couples by us cause its affordable in this area. I would definitely check out some houses there. Good luck!!!

i agree with karissa i think the rep was from a while ago and has to do with the teachers strike from way back that gave the schools a bad name. everyone is buying houses in this area and fixing them up so your property value always increases. i just bought in levittown as well and i think its great. my stepfather has lived here almost his entire life and adores it

Re: Levittown???

I can't say why Levittown got a bad rap years ago, but hubby and I bought a home here about 6 months ago. We commute into the city and the houses here were in our price range for the areas we wanted to be in. I was more impressed with some of the neighborhoods here then I was in other towns. And believe me I looked all over and was very thorough. What I like about Levittown is the neighborhoods. So many people have invested a lot of money into their homes & property. It shows they care and raises the return value of the homes. We have a lot of young couples and families around us, as the neighborhood turns over, which is good.

I will admit initially I was turned off by the lack of basement/attic. So maybe that turns alot of people off, but we have a 2-car gargage which is great.

can anyone tell me approx how much the taxes are here?

Re: Levittown???

It definately depends on the house and what 'extras' have been added. Ours is about $7500 before STAR.

Re: Levittown???

Don't quote me on this but I believe the story is that Levittown was built towards the end of WWII, Mr. Levitt wanted to build housing for the young couples returning from war. He built them very quickly so I believe most of them don't have basements and were very small so must people have to spend big $$ into expanding them. Other than that I haven't heard anything bad as far as the neighborhood goes.

I grew up in Massapequa and Levittown did have a bad rap years ago but I think that was because of the schools (and the history of the Levitt houses) and perhaps the riffraff from Hempstead Tpke. I had a boyfriend who lived in Levittown and it was more of a blue collar area where he lived as opposed to where I lived but it was a really nice house and great little neighborhood. I'm sure its better now too this was back in the late 80s/ early 90s.

Re: Levittown???

One thing about Levit. He built them strictly as starter homes. I just bought a levit colonial in NJ - yes, he built out here too.

Did he cut corners, yes - but most builders in todays market do too.

Levittown is fine and it is up and coming.

Don't rule it out, don't rule anything out when you looking at purchasing a home. If you are on a limited budget, as most of us are, you are going to have to accept the fact that more than likely you will have do something to the house you buy.

Re: Levittown???

hi ( :

i also was born and raied in levittown and i just bought a house here with my DH. i kniow levittown got a bad rep in the past. who knows why. probably because the houses are affordable and people think that makes it trash. honestly, levittown is a wonderful neighborhood with great schools and people. its a tight-knit community with hard working homeowners, which in my opinion, add to the quality of character here.

the houses dont have basements, but the houses were all built so you can expand both sideways, back and up. which is what we plan on doing. ( :

good luck. and also, just to add...a lot of youn couples are moving here. if you drive around all the parts of levittown, (its big!) youll see how people are building, expandind, and 'beautifying' the place.

There are so many of us in Levittown we should have our own GTG in town.

Re: Levittown???

This may not help too much with figuring out what the town is like now, but here's some basic Levittown history:
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g1epc/is_tov/ai_2419100714/pg_2

...and a couple of interesting Levittown facts for those who aren't aware...

Levittown is one of the original post-war 'racist' communities.
The deed to each of the original Long Island homes included a covenant barring such families from ever buying the home. If an owner later decided to sell his home to a 'Negro family,' that owner could be sued by his neighbors.

Levittown has it's own movie! It's not really a great film, and definitely less than respectful to the residents it focuses on, but hey - might be worth a chuckle or two:
