L.I. Housing Costs - Poll

Original post by DeniseMang

Ok, so we got married 6 months ago and are living with the in-laws in a one room basement. We were going to stay a year to save money and start looking next May (around our 1 year anniversary) for a home. Well, we started looking earlier than we thought we would. Its very hard living in one room, let me tell ya!

The problem is, we are walking into small, tiny capes for $325K??? The market is crazy. Well my DH and I have different views on the future market. He believes we should wait and follow our original plan (till next year), that something is bound to happen because prices can't keep going up. I see it as prices will keep rising or interest rates will rise, which will leave in the same boat we are in today. P.S. We are looking in Western Suffolk, South Shore -- Lindenhurst, Babylon, W. Islip, Islip. Don't think we will go that far East, maybe to Holbrook.

What do you girls think? Should we wait? Do you believe the market will turn. I would love to hear everyone's opinions, views on this topic. Thanks.

Exactly, Long Island has it all! Beaches, great park system, wineries, easy nyc access, good transportation lines, shopping, good schools, museums, it will always be desirable IMO. I grew up in massapequa and didnt realize how wonderful I had it! Now hubby & I are looking at homes in northern NJ and the area while nice, does not compare! Mostly because of the beaches-- NJ beaches are south and not as nice in my opinion......oh well.

Good luck to all of you ladies looking in Long Island, its such a tough market! FH and I are looking in Connecticut, and are seeing wonderful houses in the $250k range that are near a lake, with wonderful school systems. I love LI, but do not want to spend that much on a tiny house- FH is really into stretching our house budget

I wish we could have moved to NJ, or CT, but job regulations prevent us from doing so

But we did find a cute house in Ronkonkoma

it really is depressing what the prices of homes are nowadays...i honestly don't have a clue how people do it...dh owns a small construction co. so ideally we could buy a crappy house and fix it up slowly, but even the bad ones are at 300-400 in nassau and some of the nicer queens areas....so frustrating!!!

The prices wont go down that much though. But they will plateau out.

We are probably going to look in CT or Westchester. I refuse to work till Im 90yrs old for a house. My Fi and I do nicely fiancially, but I cant see giving up the 2 vacations a yr to live on LI. Its terrifying. Prices are outragoues.

We bought one of the new houses that they are building In Dix Hills. It should be done in a few months.
We love the half hollow hills school district.

It was ridiculous money but well.. thats what you gotta pay to get anything out on Long Island

My fiance and I are considering moving to Florida but it will be a huge change leaving my family. Anyone else planning to make a move to another state and start a new life? How are you coping?
