Me and my fh are debating where we're goign to live after we get married. I love nyc but it's so expensive. I was wondering if you girls can recommend any LI neighborhoods that are affordable.(by affordable i mean 200,000 for condo and prob 400,000 house, do these prices even exist these days?) I would ratehr buy a condo, he wants a house.

I've been looking online at 2 bedroom condos in Nassau and the cheapest I've been able to find is around $350,000. And then of course add in at least $4,000 a year in taxes and additional maintenance fees. I've only looked in Nassau so Suffolk might be different. This is the website I've been using:

How do you feel about Queens? Maybe Howard Beach or Bayside...I think they might be more reasonable than LI.

I agree with J here. As I do my pre-shopping on mlsli, I feel like Queens may be the better option for me.

Queens is a good choice for co-ops and condos. We currently rent in Astoria but since it's right next to Manhattan co-op prices are really high.
If you go a little further into Queens to Jackson Heights, the prices are a lot better. You can get a 1 br for $200,000 there.
Forest Hills is a little further into Queens but completely subway/LIRR accessible. It's also gorgeous there and becoming really popular recently. You can get 1 bdrm co-ops in the $200-$250K range.

I'm considering that area. I know forest hills is very pretty. I'll pretty much consider and area thats affordable. I though LI would be less expensive becase its further from the city. Sometimes i want o mive to a dif. state but i'm scared of such a huge change and leaving my family.

Re: LI residence.
I've thought about leaving NY too, especially after watching those house-hunter type shows on HGTV and seeing that you can buy an actual house for $200k in other parts of the country.
But I really don't think I could be away from my sisters and family, etc. I went out of state for college and was fine, but moving permanently is a lot different. I can't imagine raising a family without my own family being somewhat nearby. It's tough.

Re: LI residence.
Why dont u check out where I live in Queens. Rockaway. They are building new houses as we speak and a lot of people are moving down south and selling their houses.
I live right near the beach if u like the beach...Rockaway use to be considered Long Island (since we are on the long island sound) but now we're are considered Queens. It's right next to Howard Beach, broad Channel, Cederhurst, and brooklyn is a bridge away. And it's country out here...

OH YES I've been out here all of my life...the COMMUTE *****!!!! And the winters out here a crazy cold.
I'm looking for a house that has the rent with the option to buy...I think that would be cool...but wherever is affordable is cool. I'm trying to talk my mother into letting us live here at my house since it's a two family house until we save up some money...but we'll see

Re: LI residence.
We live in a 1 bedroom condo in Middle Island, In suffolk COunty. It an ok neighborood (not the greatest, but If FH says we can live here than its not too bad) We got our condo for 131, 000. Granted, it was a fixer upper but we paid significantly less than the other units in the development. Definitely check out mlsli.com it was a huge help for us! Good luck!
