LI Teacher Resume Submitting Q

LI Teacher Resume Submitting Q

I'm sitting here sorting/organizing myself to send out resumes, complete apps for LI.

I guess I'm looking for the best way to go about it.

I have all the LI school districts in front of me & have been going from website to website to see if I have to mail/do online app.

Any suggestions/comments for girls that have been here?

Also, silly Q, but over the weekend I ran into someone (through a friend of a friend) who said she has a friend that works in a school district & its a GOOD idea to attach a pic w/ your resume. Sounds kinda dopey to me, but she said it makes that person stand out & puts a name to a face. Comments on that?

Thanks so much.

DO NOT DO THAT!!! Its one thing if they ask for a picture. But do not send one. You'll stand out in a bad way.

I agree, don't send the pic. I know my mother (who is part of the resume screening for her district) would just laugh and throw it away. They are nit-picky for small details b/c of the volume of resumes they get. She is also very critical on spelling and grammar. I would say you can check school websites but they may not always be updated/current. Definitely check the NYtimes.com each week. Good luck!

I am an elementary teacher looking for a LI job too.

DON'T -Definetely don't attach a pic to your resume. Send transcripts, license, cover letter.(When sending through the mail!)

DO put a picture in your portfolio though. My student teaching supervisor told us that

GOOD LUCK

I agree, DON'T put a picture.

What you can do is to make sure your cover letter is unique and sounds interesting. You want to stand out in a positive way- good writing skills.

I know my district will only accept resume's on line through their website. You can send each principal a copy of your resume but I would also make it known in the cover letter that you have submitted a copy online so they know.

Good luck!

PS- I don't think you should send transcripts and certifications until they ask for them.

Thanks so much for your comments/advice.

I definitely did not think the picture was a good idea (I know once in business someone sent their pic w/ their resume) & we all abused the guy (& his resume ended in the trash). But after hearing it from this woman that has a friend IN the district, I wanted to be sure.

Kelly, thanks will do that with the principals also.

You guys are the best!!!

I was just lurking on this post - I am not an LI teacher.

Just wanted to say that it is ALARMING that a district would encourage a photo. I hope your friend's info is wrong! It is totally against the law and gross. It cuold lead to racism/age discrimination - why else would they care what you look like?

I work with grad students looking for wall street jobs. Many of the students are European and it is the custom to have a pic of yourself with your resume. I have to tell them time and again DO NOT do that here.

I have NEVER heard of that. I agree with everyone else I would NOT do that.

Good Luck
