LI TEACHERS HELP! Getting excessed

LI TEACHERS HELP! Getting excessed

Hey girls...I know this is a shot in the dark but I figure it cant hurt. I just recently found out from my school district that I will be getting excessed at the end of this year due to decreasing enrollment. This is just the worst timing because I JUST GOT TENURED and Im getting married this summer. :(

If there are any teachers out there who work in districts that are looking for elementary classroom teachers or reading specialists next year, please keep me in mind. I have certification in both.

Right now I work in a district with a very 'good reputation' on Long Island. I'm looking to stay on the island but the job market is so competitive here. If anyone has ANY info for me out there please send me a FM. I appreciate this more then you know.

Thanks!!

Unfortunately, I live in NC so couldn't help you.

But if you ever relocate to Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill they are DESPERATE for teachers due to an exploding population. If you're ever considering relocation, it's a great place (I've heard that they offer good relocation packages, but I'm not certain).

I am not a teacher and am confused. I thought tenure meant you had job security and this can't happen?

How can they do this to you?

I hope you can find an even better job quickly! you sound very qualified

I might be facing the same problem next year! Maybe your school would be willing to help you look for another position, sometimes the Principal will make some calls on your behalf...best of luck!

If you have tenure you really can't get fired until you are getting excessed and then in that case it goes by seniority.

This really stinks!!! I wish I could help.

You have job security in the sense that they can't just fire you without 'due process'. It is difficult to get FIRED once you have tenure.

However, if they eliminate your position b/c of decreased student enrollment, then they 'let you go' b/c your job doesn't exist anymore.

I am soo sooo sorry. I wish I could help. I work in a private school. Would you be interested in working in a private school? It would mean a pay cut I don't know of any positions right now, but if I hear anything, I will keep you in mind.

If you have tenure, you can't be excessed. You have a job, they probably have to move teachers around within the district, like you may have to work in a different building. If you have tenure, you can't be let go unless you did something wrong. I would talk to your union rep about this, I am a teacher and this doesn't sound right to me. I have friends that don't have tenure, and they are the first ones to get excessed if something happens. I'm also surprised they are talking about this now, usually districts don't know what they are doing until after budget votes in May.
Def. talk to your union.

There is a seniority list within the district, so if your school is losing a position and you are higher on the district list, they may shuffle you to a different school to ensure you a job. However, if due to declining enrollment the district is cutting down on the number of teaching positions, you can be excessed even if you have tenure.
