Licking envelopes....long!

Licking envelopes....long!

Keep seeing this around and since us brides have many envelopes and stamps to glue....

from my email:
I used to work for an envelope company. Our plant
supervisor used to work in the Chicago plant and told us not to lick the envelopes because they would often find dead rats at the bottom of the glue barrel (after thousands of envelopes had been glued and shipped). EEWW!
------------------------------------------------------

I work in a factory and we have 2 employees who used to work in an envelope factory. They told me that when the machine jams up, they use whatever water is handy to thin out the glue. This includes water that they just mopped the floor with. Since then, I've avoided licking envelopes...
-----------------------------------------------------------

1.) If you lick your envelopes... You won't anymore!!! A woman was working in a post office in California. One day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady cut her tongue on the envelope. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, but they found nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything. A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get so sore, that she could not eat.

She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!! There were roach eggs on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and
moist... This is a true story reported on CNN.

-----------------------------------------------------------

3.) To All: I used to work for a print shop (32 years ago) and we were told NEVER to lick the envelopes. I never understood why until I had to go into storage and pull out 2500 envelops that were already printed for a customer who was doing a mailing and saw several squads of roaches roaming around inside a couple of boxes with eggs everywhere. They eat the glue on the
envelopes. I think print shops have a harder time controlling roaches than a restaurant. I always buy the self-sealing type. Or if need be, I use a glue stick to seal one that has the type of glue that needs to be wet to stick.
-----------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE PASS THIS ON, if you like TO YOUR FRIENDS. After reading this you will never lick another envelope or stamp ever again.

Have a nice day, & keep your tongues where they belong!

Oh how right you are. When I used to sell Tupperware, one of my biggest selling points was when I would tell people that a roach could live ONE MONTH off of the glue from one stamp. It is the same glue that is found on the glue that holds boxes of foodstuff together (i.e. pasta boxes, cereal or anything you get from a box in the supermarket. That is why you will often see bugs at the top of your boxes when you open them up. GROSS!

OK you now convinced me to go to Staples and get some glue sticks!!! Ewww!!

Does that now mean I should take the invites that I got in the mail and store them in plastic bags for the next few months instead of the box they came in??

Re: Licking envelopes....long!

I'm not suggesting that licking envelopes is as healthy thing to do, but with regard to the cockroach in the tongue story:

from truthorfiction.com

Summary of the eRumor:
A California woman who worked in a post office decided one day that she would lick some envelopes instead of using a moist sponge for that purpose. In the process, she accidentally cut her tongue. Later, she noticed a swelling in her tongue, but a doctor could not find anything wrong. It finally got so bad that she was having trouble eating, so she want back to the doctor. He did some tests, found a lump on her tongue, and did surgery. During the surgery, he cut open the lump and a live cockroach crawled out. It was determined that she got cockroach eggs in her tongue from the envelope that caused the cut and they incubated there.

The Truth:
This is a widely-reported urban legend. There has never been a documented case of this happening. Various versions of the false eRumor are circulated including one that describes people who got cockroach eggs into their salivary systems from infected taco meat at a fast food restaurant.

I usually lick my finger and then rub it along the envelope because otherwise I gag.
