so im starting my new jobbb( eeckkk!!) on the 24th-- as far as the unlimited passes, do you get them on the 1st of every month? does it matter the day, are they just good for the month? can they be pro-rated?

I have the unlimited monthly for the subway. It does not have to be the first of the month. You can purchase it whenever and start to use it.

1st of the month for LIRR I would buy ten trips until the 1st of June and then start Unlimited after

you should buy them online so they are mailed to your house automatically.
You save money for purchasing online vs. machine (I believe 4%??)
and you'll save an additional 4-6 percent i believe if you purchase the unlimited metro in conjuction with the monthly pass.
Though, this may have changed. I stopped commuting almost a year ago.

I would buy a 10 trip to start but register for Mail and Ride ASAP on the MTA.info site for the LIRR. It takes a little while for you to get processed into the system.
you save 2% on the unlimited metro card if you do both together.
It's gets mailed to your house a couple weeks prior to the first of the month and they can decut the amount directly out of your account or you can pay via check by dropping it off in Penn Station.
I used to just buy a $$ amount mentro card and it ended up costing more and causing me stress. Never knowing how much I had on my metro.
Now I have unlimited, never have to worry, it comes right to my house and i'm on my merry way.
Upfront it may cost more but you save a little bit in the end.
