Notes on 'worst' dog foods

Nature's Best Science Diet Adult Dog
with Real Beef
Why? - Notice the first ingredient and subsequent ingredients:
Brewer's rice, ground wheat, turkey meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, animal fat, beef, vegetable oil, peas, carrots --
a protein source is THIRD on the list of ingredients and notice it is not
the BEEF pictured or mentioned in the title of the food.
Beef appears way down the list. WDJ also did not like the 'animal fat' added to the food - this is a low cost additive of dubious origin
(what animal's fat are they using??)

They go on to say:
'For what it's worth this is Science Diet's best offering to date given the 2 whole vegetables, its natural preservatives (they usually favor artificial preservatives).'

Worst of the worst: Purina's Beneful
Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, chicken by product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow, rice flour, beef, soy flour,
sugar, sorbitol....

According to Whole Dog Journal:
' Nothing redeems this food in our opinion,
with its dried peas and carrots (20th and 21st on the list of ingredients) 2 types of sweetners (9th and 10th on the list), with artificial colors.'

Whole Dog Journal also mentions that rotating between 3 or 4 top quality foods is better than sticking with just one food for all of your dog's life.

Re: List of Top Dry Dog Foods

LOL!! Hershey used to eat Beneful (but that's because I am the exact sucker consumer they are looking for ... I liked how it looked!!).

All three dogs now eat a combo of Drs Foster & Smith Senior and Iams Weight Control and frozen string beans.

I'm a sucker too! I didn't know until just recently how crappy Science Diet is. My vet recommended it, so I thought it was good.....until I read the ingredients and started doing some research!
This weekend I'm going to pick out a new food for Bama.

Yippe :)
it's worth it, believe me :)

of course molly sucks all the wet off the dry- what a brat!

She does go back and snack on the dry later in the day

Re: List of Top Dry Dog Foods

OK - Where do you find half of these? I honestly never heard of most of them. Do they have them at Petco?

Re: List of Top Dry Dog Foods

They don't sell them at PetSmart - but Natural Balance is sold at the Petco by me (in Virginia). If you look them up online you can search for where they sell them.

Innova was on last year's list, so if nothing has changed with it, I'm sure it's still very good.

I just ordered from Flint River . Very impressed with their ingredients, and it was $28 for a 20lb bag. Free shipping too!

Re: List of Top Dry Dog Foods

I am HUMBLED to say...after the last post about the AWFULNESS of Science Diet I have further investigated and found that, yes, it is not one of the best, ALTHOUGH the puppy formula is a good source of nutrients for PUPPIES. HOWEVER I am weening my puppy onto Wellness puppy. You were all correct in that it does not have any yucky ingredients (beaks, feet, eyes, etc... I was horrified to find out that's what 'by-products' are) and much to my dismay my puppy LOVES it!! She eats it like candy. I did speak w/ my vet first and they said that SD is good for her as a puppy, but now that she's getting older ( ) the Wellness will be a good transistion. Sooooo, thank you all for your informative arguments and info
PS - My 1 complaint... Wellness STINKS!!!
