Local LI workers - what are your average monthly travel expenses?
Hi everyone, So I'm just about at the end of my rope (not to mention my bank account!!) with the ridiculously expensive rates on the LIRR. Between the monthly train ticket and Metro Card, I'm spending close to $300 a month! I can't even afford to have a car on top of that kind of transportation expense, and I've really been thinking a lot about looking for jobs on the island. I'm pretty sure what I'm spending for public transportation a month on the train is much more than what I would spend if I had a car with monthly payments and gas... But then again, gas prices being what they are, I'm really not sure anymore! So I'm just curious - on the average, how much do you spend per month on car payments and gas included? Thanks for your feedback - it's very helpful!

well, it depends because you can buy used car for cheap and have no car payment, but just insurance or gas, or you can be like me and have a 275 dollar a month car payment, plus the 50 bucks a week for gas, plus the 85 dollars a month for insurance, which brings us to a total of 560 bucks a month. So it all depends. If I had an old car that I paid cash for, then I would only spend 285 a month.

Thanks, that helps put things into perspective for me! If I did start working out here - I would most likely get a cheapy used car since it would only be used for local driving. My sis did that and I think she only spends about 200 a month or so on gas and insurance together. Well, we'll just have to see what happens! I'll probably just buy something used soon anyway, I grew up driving on Jersey highways, and I really miss driving!

I have a 1997 used car so it is all paid for. My insurance costs $600 every 6 months (so thats $100 a month) and I used to spend $20 a week on gas, now it is more like $25-30.
So thats about $200 a month total.

Insurance is about $100 a month, and gas for me is about $20 a week....I also pay to park in the parking garage at work, which is enclosed, which is about $30 a month...

Another consideration is whether you'd be taking a pay cut working on LI. I know in my profession (lawyer), the salaries on LI are substantially lower than those in NYC.
