Loki tried to run away this morning

Loki tried to run away this morning

He wiggled himself out of his harness as we were in front of my friend's house & he took off! He ran 2 1/2 blocks & then one of the neighbors heard us calling him & running after him (and sooooo not keeping up). She came into her front yard & DOVE into the bushes to ctach him.

If she did not get him, we would have lost him for sure I am scared now b/c he wiggled out of his harness, which is actually a little small for him (not too tight, but small). Now I do not know what to do & with us moving soon I am afraid that he will try to run away

Also I want to buy something for the lady who caught him - any thoughts?

I can just imagine the panic you felt. You can probably take the harness apart and sew it yourself to make it smaller. Scooby managed to work his chin under his and he chewed through a part of it. I did a very tight zigzag on the machine and it's good til the next time.

What to buy this great lady who helped you? I would get a box of chocolates, a plant, or a bottle of wine.

Once we got lost on the way to a friend's new house and we stopped and asked someone for help. They got in their car and led us there. We gave them one of the bottles of wine we bought my friend and we felt so good afterwards. Do it! Sometimes we plan on nice things and never get around to it.

Thank you! I think I am going to make a wine & cheese basket for her & her DH.

I was totally panic stricken. He just would not come back when we called him & kept running further away .

He def needs to be fixed...he ran right toward a house with a female dog in heat!

I cannot wait until he gets snipped next Tuesday...hopefullly he will calm down some after that

Hearzbellz - I am glad you where able to catch him. Sandy has done this to me at least 2 times. I had such a hard time catching her. Its one of the breeds little quirks. They are escape artists.

I'm so glad someone grabbed him!

Maybe you should consider getting him microchipped in case he ever gets out of the harness again and if you are moving.

Good luck!

He is microchipped. I am totally afraid that he would get to the main road & get squished by a car or truck

DH said he tried it again today...I think we may have to get an electric fence

My parents just bought a new house with a huge lawn on a somewhat busy road....so they had the electric fence put in.
After one or two little shocks, Freedom won't go NEAR the little flag markers.

It is comforting to know that it works.....I am always afraid that it won't.
Although I am sure that Freedom isn't too happy about it, but if it is for their own good, then we have to, I suppose.

Definitely, training should be started so he comes when called. (I should take my own advice!) I lost one dog on the highway over 20 years ago and still feel guilty.
I know the feeling you had; it is just terrible. Just do what you can....electric fence (they don't always work), obedience training, tightening of harness, etc. There's nothing worse than losing your pet in a way that could have been prevented. Good luck.

Freedom is just as happy - she just knows that she can't go near the flags

That is really good to know. I have always considered an electric fence, but then I heard this ridiculous horror story about a dog who 'became' vicious after being shocked by the collar too many times.

Thanks for sharing stories
