Long Engagement--good decision?

Long Engagement--good decision?

It is 2 1/2 years between the time we got engaged in 2/05 and our wedding day in 5/07. It feels like we have been waiting FOREEEEVER to get married.

I keep having the feeling like I'm talking about something that seems so far away, it's never going to happen! Even though the months have started to go by quickly, I still don't feel like we are getting any closer.

I sometimes wish we would have chosen a wedding date soon after we got engaged and had just gotten everything done with in the span of a few months. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Yeah I can see that. Mine is 16 months (which are almost half over) and sometimes I wish I'd made it under a year so it wouldn't feel so far away. But, you're not really that far away anymore, just 7 more months. Plus, we only get to have this time being engaged once in our lives (hopefully) so look at it this way, it's good if it's long.. more time to enjoy it!!

yes and no i feel like u every now and again. i've been engaged for 2 yrs and im pretty much done with all the planning....just the lil details r left and NOW im REALLY feeling like when is this gonna come already BUT i have to say me and fh r paying for everything by ourselves so we NEEDED all the time in the world to go from nothing to a lot in the savings account so we couldnt do it any other way from that standpoint but i also loved the fact that i never once felt stressed about making any of my decisions bc i had all the time in the world to make them! that's a the biggest plus about having a long engagement thats why i usually recommend giving at least 1 yr or 1 1/2 to plan to my friends....soooooooooo don't worry ur day is coming and really its this may! its coming fast now! congrats

FH and I wanted to be able to buy a house first - so ours is 20 months. I think thats more common these days!

our engagement will be 2 years and 1 month when its all said and done. for the last year and half it didnt feel that bad. for some reason nor the time seems like it is in slow motion. i feel like it is the neverending 9 months ahead!

mine is about 19 months, and I am glad we have so much time. makes me feel less stressed about everything. anyway, we live together so its just a matter of making it 'official'

I love the fact that Erik and I decided to have our wedding in 07 and not 06. We were originally planning for 10/06 and I am glad we didn't! We have a lot of changes going on right now (NWR)and it would have been uber hectic to plan for a wedding now. We are taking it slow and savoring every moment (and pennies for that matter)! Enjoy! You'll only be engaged once!

yup - our engagement is exactly 23 months. over the summer i asked my mom if i should change my wedding date but its worth the wait. plus we have been dating so long, what a few extra months?

Our engagement is 2 years. I wanted to take my time planning the wedding and enjoy every minute of it. Also I wanted to live with him for a couple years before we walk down the aisle

Us too! Sometimes I wish it would just get here already but then I realize I'll have more time to work on DIY which will save me $ that I can put into other extras that I can't do myself.

Re: Long Engagement--good decision?

ok i got engaged in september of 2004- so I know how forever feels like
the decision was made to get engaged that early so we can get especially my two grandmothers together finally before the wedding.

However sometimes things just happen for a reason and sure enough the following year my grandmother passed away . So now I realize what was the crazy reason of us being engaged so early and let me tell you it was THE greatest thing I ever did......

OK try explaining that to a zillion people who askl why such a long engagement?

Re: Long Engagement--good decision?

I have a relatively short engagement <13 months>. I wanted to do it ASAP because I have the money, didnt want to wait and I wanted to still be 28 when I get married .

Now, having said that, I wish I had a slightly longer engagement. Its such a fun period in your life that you only get once and its FLYING by!!! But, whatcha gonna do?

I know how you feel. I have been engaged since 10/04 and I'm not getting married untill 10/07. The time has gone so quick though. Your day will be here before you know it.

Our engagement is a year and half total.... and yesterday was 11 months that we have been engaged. It is going so fast. I think that was perfect time to do everything in a calm, relaxed, stressfree manner. We have been taking one thing a month. However, next month we have more than one but we will just take one thing at a time. And anyway, we needed those extra months to save.

Oh I feel the same way. The long engagement was to accommodate me finishing law school and getting a job before the wedding but honestly if FH would have agreed. If we could have just gotten married summer 05 before school started that semester I think it would have been great! Our engagement is 2.5 years and I get sick of some of my friends who know nothing about weddings (especially here in NYC including the cost) saying that our engagement was so long. I've started telling them well if you have 30K to give me to get married sooner then give it up!

Re: Long Engagement--good decision?

I totally understand.

When we got engaged we had thought of this December, but then we realized we wouldn't have time to enjoy just being engaged and to enjoy the whole planning process, so we had to put it off until December of 07. It does feel like my day is so far away, especially with having like 4 or 5 weddings before our's, but I just try to reassure myself that my day will come and I will be so happy with the date we chose.

Your day will be here before you know it. Just think, on the day of your wedding, I'll still 7 more months till mine!
