Re: long island wedding gift$$$
Depends on the person and their financial situation. Also, people from other areas just don't give as much, keeping in mind that for some people (not around here:) $400 is a mortgage payment.
If your friend asked advice, then I'd tell him or her that at least $100 is a good idea...we usually give $200 or more.

$100 as a single to start, $150 per couple to start(provided they are financially able) is just my opinion to what's acceptable. (Although I think for the most part $200&up is the going rate on LI)

Is it really that much?! Thank god... I was wondering how we're going to manage to pay for our honeymoon!

Depending on the financial situation: 100 if you come to the wedding alone/ 200 and up a couple. It also depends on how close you are to the person. I make sure I at least cover the plates and give above the amount.

As a single I would start at $100, but it's whatever they can afford. Some people really don't have the money and the extra couple of dollars makes a big difference to them.

Re: long island wedding gift$$$
I think that if the wedding is in NY $100 for a single is fine. But considering that the wedding is in Minnesotta, I'd have to say that $75 would be considered more than generous. (Weddings are so much cheaper in Minnesota than they are around here)
The whole money thing is very regional. Although it's the norm on the East Coast, it might not be considered proper etiquette in the midwest. We had friends who married in the UK. If we had given money, everyone would have thought it was tacky.
If theses are 'good' friends. I'd ask what they want first, as well.

My fiance and I usually give around $300 or more depending on how close we are with the bride/groom.
Honestly, I used to try and 'cover my plate' but I think for some weddings that has become somewhat impossible as many people are now paying over $175 per person by the time you add in tax and service... I am not expecting ANYONE to 'cover their plate' at my wedding.

i agree annieb- with the rise in cateringhall prices, plus tax and the 'service charge' it can be difficult to 'cover' your plate.
