(long post, sorry) would you email a vendor if you were unhappy even after the wedding?
hey ladies, i'm back and married (pics to come soon) sorry for the long post.
overall, the day was great, but there were 2 things that bugged me. i was wondering if you guys think i should tell these vendors or if i should just let it go?
first (and biggest disappointment) was the grooms cake. i had ordered a cake from a bakery in the city, the chef is featured on a certain show on the We Network. needless to say, i had high expectations for the cake. i asked for a cake of the starship enterprise and i knew it would be difficult bc of the shape. but she had told me that should would find a mold to make it. instead, she gave me a cake that i thought really looked like crap. the ship wasn't even in the right proportions and the paint job was horrible. it looked like something i could have made. it was so embarassing bc i had told some ppl about it, thinking it would be this really cool cake. instead, i even thought about not displaying it bc it was so bad. plus, the cake was not cheap. i know its a really minor thing, but i was so pissed off about it that i even dreamt about it and woke up mad on my HM. i dind't say anything when i first picked it up bc the chef wasn't there and i was late getting stuff over to my hall... the cake was boxed up and i only say a picture on their camera (it didn't look great in the picture either)... (see the picture!)
the second issue i had was with the band. i'd start off my saying that despite my complaint, the band was awesome. but during the showcase, they had featured this one woman singer who was great. she was actually one of the main reasons i chose the band. but on the day of the wedding, i think they may have switched her out bc she did not sing a single thing. i coudln't really tell if it was the same girl or not but i was really disappointed. plus, the band director pretty much ignored several of our requests. i don't think they played a single thing on our 'must play' list (we listed a lot of songs we had heard them sing during the showcase), he promised us no group dances, but they played the twist, and i had specifically asked that the band interact with the guests on the dance floor but that didn't happen either. i feel like he should have just been upfront if they couldn't honor any of these requests....
anyway, i was wondering if you think i shoud email these vendors and tell them how i feel, or if i should just let it go?
Re: (long post, sorry) would you email a vendor if you were unhappy even after the wedding?
1) Did they show you what It would look like before you bought it?
2) Did you tell her you wanted the cake to look like the ship, or just to include the ship?
If those things were specified and it was still not what you wanted, I would complain.
I mean, to me, it looks like a sheet cake, covered in ganache, with a pretzel stick sticking out of it with a silver thing on it.
I would be livid if that was my cake and it was not what I asked for.
As far as the DJ goes, I would complain to them. I would just to have them explain to you why they didn't honor any of your requests.
Music is VERY important to me and FH, it was the base to our friendship and now our relationship. If someone messed with the music I picked out, I would flip out as well.

I agree with all of this!

no, they did not show me what it would look like, but she explained that she could find a mold similar to the actual picture (i had shown her a picture i pulled up from yahoo pics). the design of the cake was correct - ie, a sheet cake with the ship looking like it was flying on top of it. i did not request that big pretzel stick. i thought she was going to put it on a clear THIN stand so it would look like it was flying. i did not do a molded cake.. thank god, since it would have been 2x the price, and if it came out similar to this, i would have been SOOOO upset.
some guests who are big star trek fans couldn't even figure out what it was....

It isn't even silver. Did you tell her to make it silver??
I agree, this is below any expectation I would have for something like that.
I would certainly complain. Tell them that you want some money back, b/c Seriously, I have made cakes before for bridal showers/ birthday parties that have taken me days to prepare that were smaller/less decorated than this. This looks like it didn't even take them 30 minutes.
I would deffinitely complain to them.
I would also mention in yuor emails or your phone calls that you are apart of a large wedding messag board for all brides on long island/nyc and you will be posting about how terrible the cake was. Sometimes that will make people think twice about how they are going to resolve a situation.

I would def complain to both vendors exp the Cake Atelier I mean the reason you probably went to them was because of the show and I would tell them that you were VERY dissapointed by it. What did DH think of the cake??

I had a very similar problem with my band. What they played was AWESOME - but 1) they got a new singer and didn't tell me so a lot of the songs we requested were not played but instead other songs - some we asked NOT to play - were played, I think because the new guy didn't know them; 2) the guitar player was sick with bronchitis and he was supposed to sing a few specific songs they LEARNED FOR US and he didn't. They never told me he was sick until I asked about it in an email after the wedding - I kinda wish I knew beforehand, but then I thought maybe I would have been mad throughout the whole wedding if I had known.
I emailed the band leader and asked him why the songs we wanted weren't played - and why others were played in their place, and he explained the above to me. I just expressed my disappointment in not hearing the songs I wanted to hear but started by telling him that they did a great job. I don't think you can ask for $ back or anything - we did not tip the band however - but just letting them know about your disappointment will make you feel better and also will let them know what they can do to be better for future brides.
Good luck!

thanks. i'm guessing that something along those lines happened to the lead singer, especially since i had just seen her perform a week earlier. we did end up tipping the band bc they received the direction from the owner of the company, and i don't think they would deliberately not sing those songs. i think the owner just chose not to tell them any of our requests so i don't really blame the band members... thanks for the feedback...

I'd be pretty upset about the cake too. From the picture you posted I can see why it didn't live up to your expectations. I would let both vendors know that you were disappointed before you give them a bad review on here.

Cake Atelier , that is who did the cake??? Wow..I am shocked. They always seem so detail oriented on that show.

well, apparently cake atelier doesn't exist anymore bc they split up, but yes, it was someone there. that's why i was so disappointed. plus they had some FANTASTIC cakes in their bakery on display when i went to see them which is why i was sure it would come out well.

I would email and call them....you have every reason to be upset and to complain if you didn't get what you asked (and PAID) for. The things you mentioned aren't minor things that you should have to let go. I would also add (like another bride stated) that you are a member of a very popular message/chat board and that you are looking forward to their resolving the situation very soon. I would also ask yourself how you would like for it to be resolved... (ie, do you want a partial refund or a credit for a future cake, or whether just an apology will suffice? etc). Sorry you were so upset...hope things work out OK !!!

I was in a similar situation. We were upset with a couple things the caterer did. My parents told me I shouldn't waste my time complaining. But every day when I woke up, I kept thinking about some things that went wrong.
I decided to write a very polite email to the president of the company, with whom I dealt with throughout the process. In so many words, I said...
'While I understand it's after the fact, I feel compelled to say that we were a little disappointed that we didn't get a couple things on the contract (milk shake shots, fruit, bottled beer), and we asked Carlo several times to make sure we received cupcakes in the box to take home, and they weren't there, so now we have no wedding cake to have at our 1 year anniversary! We made specific points over receiving those items and we were let down.
Otherwise, as you know, we had a great time and I really appreciate all of your assistance in the process!'
He called me immediately to discuss the issues, and I reiterated that I wasn't trying to be annoying, but I would want future brides to be given everything they expected on their big day. He was so happy to receive the feedback, and while it didnt change what happened on our wedding day, he had a dozen cupcakes and a few cases of beer delivered to our house.
Did it change everything? No. But, In the end, I felt better...that I stood up for ourselves, and that we got to eat a dozen cupcakes by ourselves.
