Ok here is my advice:
Mid-muffler - broken - $360

For your muffler I would bring your car to Speedys, or Mieneke or some other muffler repair shop. You shouldnt have to pay $360 for an OEM stock muffler and mid pipe.

4 Tires need replacement. They are cracked and cupped - $455 for all four tires

The price for tires isnt too bad. That is $113.75 each. You can get less expensive tires, that is what I did recently. I would say to go to the same place that does your muffler and see what they get for tires.

Tire allignment - $69.95. Needs to be done if I get them replaced!

The alignment price is normal for a 4 wheels alignment. That needs to be done if you get new tires or else you can ruin your new tires.
Accessory Belt - cracked - $148

You can have the same shop above replace this belt....
Fluid Changes...

Coolant - $144.95
Power Steering (not sure what the issue is), but that would cost $98
Break Fluid $110
Wiper replacement - $34
Oil change - $41
Engine Flush - $58

Now to change all the fluids, you can have them filled at any repair shop you goto to get your oil change and lube. Do not ever pay over $24.99 for an oil change. How dare the dealer charge $41 for an oil change...what are they using liquid gold?

Why would the recommend gettting your engine flushed, you are just asking for trouble if you do that.

Did you goto the service department alone? I knid of think that they saw you coming....and I remember from when I worked for car dealers they used to pull this stuff all the time. They are over charging you for everything and they are telling you to replace or refill things that shouldnt be done...If I was you I would get a second opinion and stay away from the car dealers service department.

Thanks Scott! I really appreciate your help.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had to bring it in for a recall as well, so I figured I would just get the oil change while it was there..dh told me that they stiffed me, but it was easier just to have it done at the same time as the recall..

Not sure about the engine flush..maybe I heard wrong..all he kept saying was that there was goop and stuff in there..maybe he meant the area that holds the oil..no clue!!

And, I ended up dropping my car off late last night with dh..but no one was there..it was the late drop off thing that they have...But, I was the one who called and made the appointment, etc..

Hi Jo
che successo???

all that money could be used for a down paymt on a new car...definitly get 2nd opinion...good luck

Thx. Ro!!!

Oh yeah, I had that problem last year when I brought my 2001 VW cabrio to a dealer here in Philadelphia, to pass inspection. I needed it within a day or two, so they knew they could screw me, and let me tell you, did they ever. I ended up paying $1500, for god knows what... someone please explain to me why a 3 year old car needs $1500 worth of work to pass inspection? Now that I'm an attorney, forget it, if anyone tries to pull that again, they have another thing coming! To add, I'm getting rid of the VW this month - got a subaru outback instead. GOOD RIDDANCE!

So wait...the car is at the dealer now? And you are getting the work done from them or did they tell you what it needs done and said you would get back to them on that?
Scott

Ooops..sorry, I didn't see your post until now..
Yes. The car is at the dealer. He called me this morning to go over all of the above. I told him that I only wanted the oil change and recall done!! Nothing else...and that I would get back to him on the rest...99% sure I am not getting anything else done thru VW though.

OMG! I used to work at the dealerhsip, so they won't bilk me out of $$...but I NEVER go to the dealership for ANYTHING except for warranty related stuff, and like the 40,000 mile service. If it's an oil change or tires, I go to a local mechanic.

Is all of that part of some kind of mileage related factory service I agree, they saw you coming.

I worked at a VW dealer, and trust me, a woman walks in alone, it's feeding season for the pirahnas

Maybe, but I am not sure. The bottom line is that they are NOT getting the work...unless my second opinion says I need it and gives me a higher price than VW.

I had to bring my Jetta (2002) in bc that stupid malfunciton indicator light came on (about 2 weeks after I got the oil changed at the dealership) and when the guy called me to tell me what the problem was he said that the mechanics said I needed to have an oil change. I told the guy I just had it there about two weeks ago and everytime I bring it in something else stupid goes wrong. My lease is up in July...I don't know what to do now. I like the car but am a bit leary about the dealership.
