Losing sight of what's important

Original post by greenfreak

This is directed at no one specifically, it is a general statement that I would feel better addressing.

This site is a wonderful resource but I think there's a potential over time to feel like you're not spending enough money or doing enough with your wedding when you see what other women are doing. So I just want to say this:

Throwing money at a wedding is NOT the most important aspect of your marriage.

I didn't give a **** about what anybody thought of my choice of venue, or how much they thought we paid per plate. And I still don't.

Regardless of the people spending double, triple, quadruple more than me, I posted about my wedding with pride. There is no reason you should feel embarrassed about anything in comparison of what other people are doing with their money. My husband and I pledged our undying love to each other and had a great time doing it and sharing that with the people we love.

We know what's important, and it isn't how much we spent on one day out of our lives. You're (hopefully) marrying the man of your DREAMS! Money should have nothing to do with that.

So to the ladies who are worried about paying for your wedding... I know you can get starry eyed looking at everyone else's shoes and designer dress and jewelry and extras at the reception and fancy limos or fancy venues. But that's just not the point. You should have the day of your dreams. But that means the day you marry your lifelong companion. Not the day you invest in material things to try to prove to your guests that you've got money to burn. The guests who care about such things aren't worth your consideration.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating what should be the best day of your life. And if you've got the dough to do it up, congrats. But you're still only as lovely and excited and wonderful as the rest of the brides on this board.

I am not looking down on anyone or trying to get anyone angry. My point is that you're just as important as the next bride whether you're spending 100k or 20k because we're all marrying our men. The rest is just filler.

Re: Losing sight of what's important

(slight RP from previous post)
my mom was supposed to pay for our wedding pictures as a gift but had a stroke in april. i went to fh immediately and said 'we have to pay for this, she'll be out of work for a while and we cannot live with ourselves if we ask this of her.' he agreed. did it stink to pay it? yes. but it's more important to me for her to make it at all than to contribute a dime. and she's barely making it at all.

in order for my own mother to come to the wedding, my 70 year old grandmother has to fly to NC and drive her here. there are far more imporatant things involved in our weddings than many of the posters here seem to remember at times. i don't want hugs or pity...i want everyone to realize that in the end, your family and friends are all you've got...not the house, cars, savings account or the fancy espresso machine your aunt bought you. the people who love you and came to celebrate...that's all you really get in this life. love.

Re: Losing sight of what's important

thanks for posting this - i have so much time left and sometimes i get so competitive ( only in my head of course) of what other brides can afford to do! but when i get over my little freak outs i realize what is important is not that one day but all the days after ( even past the honeymoon ) where all the great free stuff comes into play - like waking up together, cooking dinner together or even raising our kids. . .

its good to remember sometimes that coordinating your centerpieces to your favors is not really all that important!

Re: Losing sight of what's important

I'm so glad this didn't get taken negatively, I was worried!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all the little touches we did and planning and such. I just had to keep reminding myself that I don't have to do everything that everyone else does.

At times, jealousy reared it's ugly head. At least once it was really bad, when someone posted a dress that was exactly what I had been looking for. But it was double what I paid for my dress, and too close to the wedding to change.

I had a couple of days where I was down about it. But DH was so understanding and even tried to help find a way to get it. In the end, I knew that I was going to be happy with what I had no matter what. Because I had him.

Anyway, thanks for being understanding. I hope this helps someone, anyone, to avoid feeling anything but joy during your wedding planning and beyond.

Re: Losing sight of what's important

I admit to falling into this trap.

I've spent more than I originally planned to spend every step of the way bc of visiting these websites!

You can't help but not wanting to 'settle'...
