Losing Weight and Your Dress...

Losing Weight and Your Dress...

Has anyone had their dress taken in significantly? Is there anyone else who worries if the dress will look the same? I ordered my dress a size bigger than I anticipated but I am going to lose these last 15 lbs!!! Anyway, should I be concerned? Any experiences with this? Thanks!!!

I'd like to know the answer to this one too!! I haven't ordered my dress yet but I expect to lose at least 20 lbs between now and October and I'm thinking that I should order it one size smaller because I'm worried about how much they'll have to take it in. I hope they will let me do that!

I think it's a lot easier for them to take a dress in than it is to let a dress out. If you're in between 2 sizes I'd go with the larger just to be safe. Also, and I really hate to say it, but there's always a chance you might not be able to take off as much weight as you planned to (I know this is definitely true for me )...... and it would really suck to end up with a wedding dress that's too small!

I doubt they will order a dress smaller than your current size. When I bought my dress, I fit into the size they had in the store and they ordered a size bigger anyway. I guess they need to justify the high price of alterations!

I think they order a size up even if you fit into the sample because they consider the sample to be stretched from trying on.

I wouldn't worry too much about losing so much weight that your dress won't look the same. If they tell you to order a size and then they cap your alterartions at a certain price, then it is their responsibility to make it look wonderful for you.

Don't kill yourself to lose too much weight, it will just make you stressed and angry and snippy with those you love. Instead work on toning and being healthy.

Yes, this happened to me..last christmas i realized I was getting to be a big girl..but it was time to get my dress, I bought it and scheduled my fitting for many months away..in teh meantime I watched my carbs and worked out, Im now down to a proud 120 pounds...yahooooo havent been this thin in a long time..but anyhow, each fitting they had to take it i more, the last time I wa there, she told me to try and maintain my weight, and now Ive lost five pounds since then..so I go wednesday to try it on one last time..its been a pain im sure for the seamstress, but tehy are happy for me that Ive lost the weight...so it can be done, its gets to be alot of altering, but it can be done...Good luck!!!

the seamstress i am using told me i could go down up to 5 sizes and still have the dress look ok - she said anything more than that would require reordering a smaller size - personally i wouldnt worry about it if you ahve a good seamstress it should work out fine

Glad to know that the dress should come out all right. I didn't want to buy the bigger size but I went with the 'just in case' attitude and now I am glad- just want to make sure that it looks good whether I lose the weight or not. Thanks to all for your comments and good luck- especially to the 1/9/04 bride!!!I am sure you will look marvelous-congratulations!

My place told me that you are safe to lose up to about 25 pounds before it starts really changing the dress.

I was concerned about this too. My dress was ordered in my current size and the seamstress told me they can take the dress in up to three sizes with no problem. She said it is easier to take the dress in rather than to let it out.

the dress i bought was ordered 1 size smaller than the one i tried on when I tried it on it had to be taken out 2 inches. I had lost weight and when i tried on the dress i almost freaked out I thought she had ordered a 10 and that should have been big until she told me she ordered and 8 i thought that I had gained weight anyway the dress is now at my house and surprisingly it looks like nothing was altered you can't tell that it was taken out 2 inches

Re: Losing Weight and Your Dress...

I KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!!!! Due to the stress and working out, and not eating and dieting pre-wedding, I lost approx. 30 lbs and a gazillion inches.. to the point where my seamstress ORDERED me not to lose anymore weight!! I looked great in my dress!!!!! If you have a good seamstress, anything is possible!!

To give you a little insight to how many inches I actually lost... You know the bra bustiere things?? When I first got the dress in the bustiere was on the last row of clips and it was pulling-- I couldnt breathe... The day before I picked up my gown I went back to try it on again, and it was on the first row of clips, and was loose!!!!!! (three rows of bra clips)

I would ask around to other brides and to the owner of the salon, see how long the seamstress has been working with bridal gowns and if any brides have had complaints... Ask the girls on here.. Someone is bound to have bought a dress from there! GOOD LUCK!!

Best Wishes and Happy planning!!
(sorry so long!!)

I lost almost 15 lbs from the day I ordered my gown to my first fitting. You want to hear something strange...the gown was only slightly big on me! Thank god I lost weight or it would have been too tight! I think this happens alot for some reason...two of my friends had the same thing happen! Don't worry until you get the gown and try it on
